Why is CAPES important? There is mounting evidence that pediatricians have become the front-line managers of patients physical and mental health needs. The NYS Psychiatric Institute, via CAPES, is uniquely situated to collaborate in this area given our location, range of expertise, and ability to provide free services. Working in tandem, the community-based providers and CAPES staff can provide more thorough evaluations and services to the patients while alleviating some of the burden placed on the pediatricians. CAPES provides easy access to voluntary research opportunities at the NYS Psychiatric Institute for youth and their families. Who is the CAPES team? What is CAPES? A FREE diagnostic evaluation and consultation service for providers and families helping youth aged 5 -17 with mental health issues. Although we specialize in youth with behavioral disturbance, we will also assist with children and adolescents with emotional and developmental concerns. What happens after the evaluation? Initial, written feedback is provided to the family. Specific treatment recommendations are formulated and explained to family including referrals to specific mental health agencies/providers if necessary. Family is informed of opportunities to participate in voluntary research protocols at the Psychiatric Institute. Family is referred back to referring physician with diagnostic formulation and treatment recommendations (e.g., medication recommendations, names of mental health treatment providers). CAPES staff are available for consultation with the referring provider, as needed. What is a CAPES evaluation? A comprehensive, expert psychological evaluation and psychiatric consultation.
