Enhanced fluorescence imaging in chlorophyll-suppressed tobacco tissues using virusinduced gene silencing of the phytoene desaturase gene
Fluorescence imaging in plants is difficult because chlorophyll and other photosynthetic pigments can block light or autofluoresce, interfering with fluorescence imaging. Zhang et al. successfully detected fluorescence in GFP-expressing tobacco plants by employing virus-induced gene silencing to transiently silence the phytoene desaturase gene, which bleached chlorophyll-containing tissues and allowed for successful imaging.
Linear measurement of cell contraction in a capillary collagen gel system
Typically, cell contractility assays are performed in three-dimensional collagen gel systems, often making exact measurements of contraction difficult to obtain. In this
Benchmark, Ludlow and his colleagues presents a new approach to measuring cell contraction in collagen gels where the cell/collagen gel suspensions are cast in capillary tubes, which enables the linear measurement of cell contraction while at the same time uses significantly less starting material.
A proximity ligation assay using transiently transfected, epitope-tagged proteins: application for in situ detection of dimerized receptor tyrosine kinases
Guha and colleagues describe a new proximal ligation assay for the in situ visualization and quantification of receptor interactions. In their Report, the authors detail their new assay and demonstrate that the method can detect ligand-dependent dimerization of the
