UNIVERSITY OF MARIBOR FACULTY OF ARTS 5th INTERNATIONAL SUMMER SCHOOL CLIMATE CHANGE – THE VIEW FROM JAPAN TO CANADA June 26th – July 10th, 2010 In 2005, the University of Maribor held its first International Summer School on British and American language, literature, and culture. This year, the Faculty of Arts at the University of Maribor will host the 5th International Summer School. The theme of the Summer School will be “Climate Change – the View from Japan to Canada”. The Summer School will be a joint initiative between the Faculty of Arts, the Embassy of Japan to Slovenia and the Mariborski vodovod water supply company, and will offer lectures in philosophy and culture, Canadian literature, multiculturalism, climate changes, ecological topics and legal steps in protection of the environment, intended for undergraduates, postgraduates and teachers from around the world. It will begin on Saturday, June 26th, and finish on Saturday, July 10th 2010. The town of Maribor traces its history back over 800 years. Maribor enjoys a scenic location on the plain beside the River Drava, and its sky-line is dominated by the Piramida, a vine-covered hill overlooking the town and the fifteenth-century Castle at its heart. The second-largest city in Slovenia, Maribor is a centre of culture and learning. The city boasts a theatre (the Narodno Gledališče), a concert hall (the Narodni Dom), a twelfth-century cathedral, the oldest grapevine in the world, several cinemas and nightclubs, three bowling alleys, two thermal spas, and its museum and art gallery offer visitors the best of Slovenian and Yugoslavian art, history, and culture. Maribor will be one of the cultural capitals of Europe in 2012. The University Library provides facilities for research in all fields and is available for use by Summer School students . The two weeks of the Summer School will be an especially exciting time to be in Maribor. The last week of June and the first week of July, the city hosts the traditional Lent Festival, featuring international and local artists and musicians, and the streets are full of people and performers. We look forward to welcoming you to the 2010 University of Maribor International Summer School in Maribor, the city at the heart of Slovene Styria.
