Professional Discussion Group
"Mirroring, Bridging, and Survival"
Robert J. Marshall, PhD
Dr. Marshall will discuss the prevalence and significance of mirroring in psychotherapy, human
relations, animals, and in nature. He will provide evidence from social, cognitive, and neuro-sciences that will
suggest that there is a biological underpinning for terms such as bridging, joining, empathy, resonance, etc.
Mirroring may be considered to be a basic need and a default mechanism that has significant survival value.
From Marshall's point of view, transference, countertransference, projective identification, and
reenactment become more valid and meaningful in individual and group therapy. Finally, Dr. Marshall will
propose that mirroring not only enhances treatment, but can contribute to therapists' well-being and
survival. Audience questions and discussion will be welcomed.
Robert J. Marshall, Ph.D. is a training and supervising analyst on the faculty of The center for Modern Psychoanalysis. He
