The Loveless Genealogy
Written with much thanks to Jan Owen and the Bergling family who
provided much information about the Loveless family.
James H. Loveless was born in 1825. It is unknown at this time who
his parents were. His age was determined by the 1850 census.
James Loveless married Caroline B. Gates, daughter of Grant and
Caroline B. Gates on December 24, 1845 in Prince George’s County
Maryland. Her death certificate reveals this parentage.
Diversion:
Caroline had a brother William and sister Sarah. William was in the
Civil War and his bayonette was given to Caroline’s grandson Joseph
Bergling in 1920. Sarah Gates was nicknamed Fanny. She married
a Beall? She had a son Frank Gates whose family included his wife
Maria, sons Tom and Frank( dentists) and daughter Mabel Gates
Willard of Berwyn Heights, MD Mabel is found on the 1930 census
as: William Willard age 53, Mary M. age 43,(Mabel) and daughter
Roberta age 20. Mabel was on the same census page as James C.
Loveless Jr. ,his wife Mabel and daughter Anne E. Thomas J.
Gates was born in 1869. He was married to Abbie Unknown.
According to the 1900 census, they were listed as: Thomas J. dentist
age 30, Abbie age 26, Abbie N. age 6, Thomas D age 3 and Herbert
S. age 1. By 1920 the list was as follows: Thomas J. age 50, Abbie

age 73 from England. On the 1930 census, Herbert S. Gates age 32
is listed as a doctor. Theodore Gates died on October 5, 2001 at St.
Petersburg, Florida.
Sarah died at the age of 92 at the Sisters of the poor on H. St. in
Washington ,DC
Caroline was born on July 4, 1825 at home near the water tower on
Ridge Road in Greenbelt MD The Gates family had land there that
some say was a result of the Magna Carta. There is an oral tradition
story handed down that relates that Caroline Gates was related to
General Horatio Gates of the American Revolution. Her father did not
want her to marry James H. Loveless because he was not of a higher
class. There was something about, “ he did not have silver spurs”
2
Only the well to do could afford silver spurs. James was the
caretaker of a plantation, “Weston” which is two miles southwest of
Upper Marlboro, MD. Caroline died in Beltville MD on April 12, 1903.
She is buried in Christian Brothers Cemetery in Ammandale. James
died sometime before 1865 when Caroline married James Wall on
February 6, 1865. She married Rufus Sabrey in 1874. There is a
land deed showing that Caroline and Rufus Sabery bought land on
January 18, 1894. Caroline and Rufus are found on the 1880 census
as Rufus Sabrey laborer, age 42,father from Florida, mother from PA,

female, James Riche age 35, labourer, John Riche age 32 laborer
and Thomas Worthington age 27 a physician. Next door to James
Loveless was a Thomas family and a Mudd family. John Thomas
age 2 probably belonged to the Thomas family. Elisha age 1 may
have been a child of James and Caroline but no other reports of him
follow. Thomas ,age 13 may have been a brother of James.
James H. and Caroline Gates Loveless had the following known
children:

her, she always had her long grey hair made into a plaited bun
around the nape of her neck. A short heavy set woman, she always
wore dresses and most of the time an apron.
We didn't see our granparents very often when I was little. Dad
would somtimes borrow his brother's car and take us there overnight.
An escape from our one bedroom apartment in Baltimore to the land
of horses, cats, dogs, cows, pigs, ducks, chickens was a real treat for us
kids and for my mother.
Life at my grandmother's was so different from life as we knew it.
There was a well outside the kitchen door from which water was
drawn and taken into the house for all purposes. On the kitchen table
was bucket full of water with a dipper in it that anyone who wanted
one could take a drink. Of course, we all did it over and over again-and no one ever got sick.
Grandma cooked on a big wood stove and also heated up her iron on
it. The main room was the dining room. She had a big table we all
sat around and she served meals in bowls that you could take what
you wanted. In that room she had a buffet cart which usually
contained all kinds of delicious buns left by her bread man.
There was a living room that I don't think was occupied very often. It
was my favorite place in the house because it had the organ in it. I
used to play that organ for hours. I don't remember ever being told to
stop. Off of the living room was one of the bedrooms. It was where
14
grandma slept. When we stayed overnight, we'd crowd in with Mary
Jane upstairs and sleep on fluffy featherbeds.
In the evening one of my uncles would light a bonfire and we'd all sit
around and toast marshmallows and hot dogs. Once I burned my
hand and grandma put butter on it --a no no today!
Sometimes I would just like to walk around the farm. My uncles kept
their coon dogs near the barn and I used to like to hear them bark. I
liked to go out near the sweet smelling bushes; even today my
favorites are bridal veil and lilacs.
When I was eleven my dad died. We moved to Uncle John's farm in
Westminster so we didn't visit grandma's so much. Mary Jane had
graduated high school and had gotten a car. They used to come to
visit us in Westminster and then they stayed overnight with us. On
those weekends, we ate lots of ice cream and cake and drank lots of
cokes!
Mary Anne Riddle was born October 5,1892 to John Richard Riddle
and Nora Anne Hart. She married Henry George Keller on October
11,1913 and had seven children, the eldest my mother,Ella. To me,
Grandma seemed jolly most of the time. I remember my grandfather
as being tall and thin. He seemed stern. They got divorced around
1950 and I never saw him again.
I didn't see my grandmother since that day in 1959 when I left for
college. She died six years later. Since I know her from a child's
point of view, I know she meant the world to my mother. She used to
call me Barbry. If I could see her just once more I'd like to tell her I
loved her. We never said things like that to each other in those days--maybe we should have.!
