Assistant Professor in Marine Ecological Genetics
Ref Nr E333 2911/07 placed at the Department of Marine Ecology
The Department of Marine Ecology has a high profile group within Marine Ecological
Genetics and Molecular Ecology. This research is lead by Professor Kerstin
Johannesson and Associate Professor Carl André, and the research group includes five
PhD students, two postdocs and one junior researcher. This new position as Assistant
Professor is aimed to further develop and strengthen the research within this field in
the department.
The research at the Department includes evolution of reproductive barriers,
speciation and intraspecific differentiation (marine molluscs, macro and microalgae
as models), as well as connectivity and population structure (fish, shellfish and coldwater corals). Collaborative research is ongoing with theoretical
biologists/mathematicians (coalescence and individual modelling of speciation
processes), fisheries biologists and physical oceanographers (modelling patterns of
larval dispersal and fish population structure), and with chemical ecologist
(investigating mechanisms of reproductive isolation among marine taxa). The
research is mainly basic but with high relevance for conservation and management of
marine populations. The applicant should have a genuine interest in developing
research within any of these areas, and should be open for collaboration inside as
well as outside the department.
The Department of Marine Ecology has activities at three different locations: at the
main campus in Göteborg and at the two research stations Tjärnö Marine Biological
Laboratory (TMBL) and Kristineberg Marine Research Station (KMF). The main
location for marine ecological genetics and molecular ecology is at TMBL where
Johannesson and André have a well-equipped genetic laboratory including facilities
for cloning, sequencing and fragment analysis (microsatellites, SNPs). A similar
facility is also available in Göteborg. Moreover, both research stations offers
excellent facilities for experimental and field activities.
The Assistant Professor will be supported by a starting-up budget of 100, 000 SEK,
but is expected to apply for continued external funding. The position is mainly for
research, but a minor share of teaching and supervision of undergraduate and
graduate students will be included.
Qualification:
It is required that the applicant has a PhD degree or equivalent, preferably no
older than five years.
Evaluation:
Own research experience in molecular genetic analyses (e.g. sequencing,
microsatellite analysis, SNPs) are considered an additional qualification, as is
experience of publishing within any of the areas molecular ecology, environmental
genomics, evolutionary development (evo-devo) population genetics.
The research group has an even gender balance and therefore applicants of
both sexes are warmly welcomed.
Period of funding:
The position is four years full time.
Applications:
Applications in English shall be addressed to the Dean of the Science Faculty.
The application must include:

Certified copies of the applicants Curriculum Vitae and publication list, a maximum of 5
copies of scientific publications or certificates of relevant earlier positions.

A short description of the applicants earlier research, teaching and other activities with a
relevance for the position.

A short description of ongoing and planned research and, if relevant, other activities with
importance for the announce position.

The name and addresses of at least two reference persons who can be contacted as
references for the applicant.
CV, publication list, description of scientific activities etc. as well as reprints
or photocopies of publications should all be submitted in 4 packages, one for
each reviewer, and sent to:
The Registrar, Göteborg University, Box 100, SE-405 30 Göteborg,
Sweden
Stating reference number E333 2911/07.
The application must be received no later than 17 September 2007.
