: The direct synthesis of dimethyl carbonate
(DMC) from methanol and carbon dioxide has received much attention in recent years due to its green nature1. Among the catalysts investigated2, the CexZr(1-x)O2 solid solutions show potentially high catalytic performance3.
Here, we report the direct synthesis of DMC in supercritical CO2 over CexZr(1-x)O2 prepared by sol-gel method, and demonstrate the effect of 1, 1, 1-trimethoxy methane as a waterremoving agent on the equilibrium shift of the titled reaction. The CexZr(1-x)O2 with various x values were prepared by sol-gel method in the medium of methanol or ethanol by using
Ce(NO3)3·6H2O and Zr(NO3)4·4H2O as precursors of the cerium and zirconium, respectively. Results (not show) indicate that both the composition of the CexZr(1-x)O2 solid solution and the calcination temperature strongly influence its catalytic performance for the direct synthesis of DMC in supercritical
CO2. The optimum composition and calcination temperature of the catalysts were determined to be Ce0.5Zr0.5O2 and 1273 K, respectively. Moreover, any by-products over this catalyst were not detected within the limits of the detectors. Thus, the quantitative study on the direct synthesis of DMC was carried out over Ce0.5Zr0.5O2 calcined at 1273 K. As given in Table 1, higher amount and 100% selectivity of DMC were obtained over the
Ce0.5Zr0.5O2 even at temperature as low as
373 K, indicating that the solid solution has a high catalytic activity towards the titled reaction at low temperatures. Moreover, the amount of DMC but not the DMC selectivity was apparently affected by the reaction parameters, and supercritical CO2 was efficient for the direct synthesis of DMC.
