The catalyst was characterized by XRD, SEM, TEM, UV/Vis, N2 adsorption-desorption, and FTIR techniques. The photocatalytic activity of the sample was evaluated by the decomposition of benzene in gas phase under UV light illumination, and was compared with commercial TiO2 (Degussa P25) and Pt/P25. Results revealed that the Cd2Ge2O6 photocatalysts had higher photoactive for mineralizing benzene to CO2 than that of P25 and Pt/P25 under ambient conditions. No obvious deactivation of Cd2Ge2O6 photocatalyst was observed during the photocatalytic reaction. The Cd2Ge2O6 catalyst also showed higher reactivity and stability for the photocatalytic decomposition of benzene derivatives (e.g. toluene and ethylbenzene) than TiO2-based photocatalysts. The improved photocatalytic performance of Cd2Ge2O6 could be explained by its beneficial textural and electronic properties.
