At the DQG Christmas party on Saturday, December 5, Susan Mapston reported on behalf of the Philanthropy Committee. She said one of the groups DQG has made and given quilts for/to is the Youth Crisis Center in St. George, and they were received by Carroll Lee Stolz's son-in-law, Bear Alo. Besides being a Counselor to 'at risk youth' at the Center, Bear is deeply involved in outreach programs and extra activities to serve the children who come through the Youth Crisis Center. Carroll Lee took the opportunity to thank DQG for the donations for the Youth Crisis Center, and spoke briefly about the needs of the facility, its subsequent outreach programs and the prospect of the Youth Crisis Center being closed down in St. George due to the State's current budget and economic crisis. She said, and many in the group agreed, that if the Youth Crisis Center were to close, the children the center helps will have no place to go. It would be a tragedy for the community of St. George and all of Southern Utah, as well as, and more urgently, a human tragedy for the children at risk, who are the young citizens, the children in need of the Center's services. Letters to Utah State Representatives and to Governor Gary Herbert by individuals in our community making pleas to continue directing funding to keep the Youth Crisis Center and Youth Receiving Centers in St. George and throughout the State of Utah, open could be most helpful. Names of Representatives and their addresses to where correspondence may be directed is listed at the bottom of this article. In addition, Bear indicated the Youth Crisis Center, being a State agency, cannot accept cash donations. However, some of the needs that can be met by those who care and wish to make contributions are: -Sponsors for the March Mayhem in the Desert St. George (March Mayhem basketball tournaments organized and played during the months of March, April and May, 2010.) The need is for Local businesses and individuals to help with tour fees for the basketball team and their uniforms and equipment. (To see more about the basketball tournament, please do a Google search for "March Mayhem in the Desert St. George".) -Boxing Equipment Boxing is a healthy activity for at-risk youth to practice focusing their aggressions in a healthy way. The boys love it. -Outdoor Sports and Play Equipment Items like, but not limited to the list below to keep the youth involved in healthy outdoor physical activity: Basketballs Footballs Soccer balls Volleyball equipment Hula hoops badminton equipment baseball equipment -On-going clothing needs for youth of all size and ages specifically include, but are not limited to: socks - all sizes underpants - (For boys, boxer shorts are preferred) and girls; all sizes for children ages 8 to 18 Pajama pants for boys and girls ( sizes small-medium-large) -Quilts - Although at the current time, quilt needs have been met by the DQG Philanthropy group, on ongoing supply would be nice to have to distribute to those children who are received into the Center in the future. Lap-size to twin size is best for youths of all ages. Since the DQG meeting, Carroll Lee has received several inquiries from members wanting to help. Anything you feel you can do is appreciated, especially writing letters to the key State Representatives for the St. George area, as well as to the Governor of Utah, Gary R. Herbert, as listed below.
