a. Travel Award—Selection in process.
b. Christmas Party was held Monday 13 December 2004 at Belle Isle Brewery.
c. COMGSA speaker—Officers went through entire list of speakers…deadline
extended for money allocated for speaker.
d. Website—Rebecka Bourn will be in charge.
e. Habitat for Humanity— A sign-up sheet was sent around the room for people who
want to participate.
f. Science Nite— Laney is going to email a couple of the surrounding elementary
schools to ask if they would like to participate.
III. New Business
a. Social Activities Chair position suggested—Andrea Moyer will fulfill
b. COMGSA Distinguished Lecturer—Dr. Joseph Nevins
i. Friday April 1
ii. Need to correspond with GREAT finances and Dr. Nevins.
schedule to determine meal/reception planning.
iii. Make a commemorative plate.
iv. Set aside money for honorary monies for speaker.
v. Create flyer for advertisement to distinguish lecture from GREAT.

VI. Old Business
a. COMGSA Distinguished Lecturer—Dr. Nevins
i. Event was a success, Dr. Nevins was very impressed.
b. Habitat for Humanity
i. All girls and 1 guy (Paul Rindler) participated
ii. Need more guys to get involved (heavy lifting)
c. Big Event
i. Plenty of volunteers—Not enough participants
ii. Suggestion—involve a church organization for community
involvement.
iii. Switch from information distribution to actual community service
in a job form
d. Spring 2005 COMGSA Dinner/Baseball game
i. Suggestion for replacement of picnic
ii. Motion passed unanimously—will utilize $250 dollars allocated
for GREAT donation (which was not issued this year) to cover
reservations at Coach’s
iii. Total funding that may be utilized for the Spring Event is $550
($300 approved from last meeting +$250 at this meeting) Not all
money has to be spent.
iv. COMGSA officers/faculty position nominations will be open until
the next meeting which will be at Coach’s @ 6:00. Elections will
be held at this time
e. Spring 2005 COMGSA Travel Award
i. Application deadlines extended to May 1 (email distributed April
1)
ii. Suggestion—Abstract word limit is 250 words—may be too brief
for some abstracts submitted to scientific conferences
VII. New Business
a. Nominations for 2005-2006 Officers and Positions (open until 25 May 2005—few
nominations made during meeting)
i. President
1. To preside at all meetings of the Association of the
Council;
2. To call special meetings of the Association and of the
Council;
3. To appoint all special committees of the Association and of
the Council, the chairperson of each committee;
4. To execute the laws of the Association;
5. To serve as or designate an Association representative to
the Graduate Student Council of the University of
Oklahoma Health Sciences Center.
6. Nominees—Rhonda Clark & Curtis McMurtrey
ii. Vice-President
1. Act as president in the event of the president’s incapacity or
absence, and shall become president if that office becomes
vacant.
2. Nominee—Janeen Arbuckle
iii. Secretary
1. To take the minutes at all meetings of the Association and
of the Council.
2. Nominee-Katie Bryant
iv. Treasurer
1. Maintain all financial records of the Association.
2. Nominee—Alison Sismey
v. Full-Time Faculty Sponsor
1. The Council shall select a sponsor from the full-time
faculty of the University of Oklahoma who shall serve for
one calendar year. The time of selection and duties of the
sponsor shall be determined by the Council at the time of
the election of the executive officers of the Association.
2. Nominees—Karla Rodgers, Biochemistry; Ann Louise
Olson, Biochemistry; Jody Rada, Cell Biology; Sinya
Benyajati, Physiology; Dragona? (associated with Dr.
Feretti), Microbiology and Immunology; Eric Howard, Cell
Biology; Dean Myers, Cell Biology; Scott Plafker, Cell
Biology; Sanjay Bidichandan, Biochemistry
4. All nominations of faculty sponsors are pending their
acceptance of nomination
vi. Social Chair (pending acceptance of Constitution Amendments—

i. Preparing Future Faculty Program
1. Sign up for 2 semesters—1st Semester is didactic, 2nd
Semester is teaching.
2. Accepting 10 students—selected by a committee
3. Applications due June 1.
4. Pass/Fail Course
5. Must have General Exam completed
6. Afternoon course—meets once a week for 2 hours.
7. Tuition for 2 courses covered by Graduate College
8. Must have permission from mentor—will be spending
some time outside the lab/Mentor need not be on OUHSC
campus
9. Contact Dr. Tomasek for more information.
ii. Fellowships—Graduate College will supplement fellowships with
and extra $2000.
1. Must be a competitive Fellowship
2. Must be peer-reviewed
3. Must be a national program
c. Constitution Amendments (motion passed unanimously for those in attendance at
the meeting—A vote will be opened to the quorum via email for 25 May 2005)
i. The addition of Genetic Counseling into Section II to be included
with “graduate departments of the College of Medicine
ii. The addition of Section X—Social Chair
1. The social chair will be responsible for organization of all
social events
iii. Department Finance Allocations—this was not voted on by the
meeting attendees today, however the information will be emailed out
and voted on 25 May 2005.

a. Next COMGSA meeting (Elections for 2005-2006)—May 25th 6:00 Coach’s

Graduation Requirements
Matt Gibson talked about setting possible requirements for graduation. There is
wide variation among different departments and different labs. Possible requirements
discussed are number of papers published, years in the program, or impact factor.
Back to school BBQ
A quorum was present and voted yes to BBQ. Discussed talking to different
business’s about sponsoring the BBQ.
Feed the children
Discussed spending a Saturday helping Feed the children
Distinguished Lecturer
We need to ask GSA about funding and plan for a talk in the spring
