The Purpose of the New Role:

You will be expected to plan and execute a research programme in the
synthesis of chemical scaffolds. You will be expected to synthesise, and
characterise a wide range of compounds prepared via known and novel
protocols.
You will be required to keep accurate record (lab books, spectra etc) of your
research
You will be required to engage in the daily mentoring of graduate and project
students, and take responsibility for the safe running of the research
laboratory.
You will be required to contribute to the publication of the research by drafting
scientific articles.
You will be required to liaise with academic and industrial collaborators as
appropriate.
You may be asked to perform other duties occasionally which are not included
above, but which will be consistent with the role, for example contribute to the
teaching of organic chemistry in the School.

Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications & Experience
Qualifications/
Education
Essential
Demonstrate excellence in synthetic
organic chemistry with appropriate
experience (minimum 3 years
experience in synthetic chemistry
Desirable
PhD in organic chemistry.
Experience in parallel synthesis.
A track record of published
research in quality journals.

Ability to play a leading role in
research group in mentoring less
experienced researchers.
Research experience across a
wide range of areas focussed on
synthetic organic chemistry and
natural product synthesis.
Experience in the handling of airsensitive compounds and natural
product synthesis. Experience of
parallel synthesis and purification.
Experience of HLPC.
Decision Making
i) taken independently by the role holder;
Executing synthetic organic chemistry by appropriate experimental procedures
ii) taken in collaboration with others;
Ensuring safe operation of research laboratory
iii) referred to the appropriate line manager (please name) by the role holder.
