*SAMPLE* Major and Minor Scales Each student will be given a note to call “do” (for major scale). The student must sing a major scale, up and down, using solfege syllables. The student must then find the note “la” and sing a natural minor scale in the relative minor, up and down. Students may sing scales at whichever tempo they choose, but with minimal pauses. Students must achieve at least a “Basic” level in all columns to receive a passing grade in this class. 50 Points Possible Unsatisfactory (1-6.9 points) Basic Proficient Distinguished Completes both scales with almost all correct intervals, sings in the center of nearly all pitches. Completes both scales with almost all correct solfege syllables with hardly any pauses. Sings almost all solfege with accurate vowel shapes as discussed in class (tall, no spreading). Completes both scales with all correct intervals and sings in the center of the pitch, with a vibrant tone. (7-7.9 points) (8-9.4 points) (9.5-10 points) Pitch Accuracy Fails to complete both scales; mostly incorrect intervals and pitches. Completes both scales with mostly correct intervals and sings mostly correct pitches. Solfege Syllable Accuracy Vowel Clarity Mostly incorrect solfege syllables and/or many pauses. Completes both scales with mostly correct solfege syllables with some pauses. Sings almost no proper vowel shapes (much spreading, no effort to sing tall vowels). Sings most solfege with good vowel shapes as discussed in class (tall, no spreading). Breathing and Posture Does not make effort to stand correctly or breathe properly for singing Stands with acceptable posture; breathes fairly properly Stands tall; breathes properly most of the time Stands tall, feet shoulderwidth apart, hands at sides; breathes properly using diaphragm Finding Relative Minor After singing major scale, cannot find the relative minor of the major key provided. After singing major scale, eventually finds the relative minor of the major key provided. After singing major scale, fairly quickly finds the relative minor of the major key provided. After singing major scale, immediately finds the relative minor of the major key provided.
