[Club Name Here] 2007-2008 Information Packet The [Club Name} is based out of [Site High School]. We believe that by keeping our area children involved in the sport of wrestling, we can help to keep them off the streets, away from gang activity and drug free. Our staff consists entirely of volunteers who serve as Board Members, coaches, referees, and mentors. We are a part of the California Age Group Wrestling Association (CAGWA) and participate in their tournaments throughout the season. PARENT PARTICIPATION: Parent participation plays a crucial part in the overall success of the [Club Name] Wrestling. In attempting to make our club attainable to as many children as possible in our area, we keep our registration fees to a bare minimum. All fundraising proceeds are for the benefits of the team and not for any individual wrestlers. Funds raised are used to defray the costs of participation in out of area tournaments, including State Championships, Regional Championships and even National Championships. Additionally, as a member of CAGWA, our club is required to provide parent volunteers to work a scoring table (and bout room if necessary) at each and every tournament. If our club fails to provide the required number of volunteers, we may be fined which in turn cuts into the funds available for the benefit of the wrestlers. REGISTRATION: Registration fees for this year are $???.00 per wrestler and includes USA Wrestling card*, team shirt, team shorts, use of a singlet, and team trophy. Returning wrestlers may opt for reduced fee of $??.00 but will not receive new team shirt and shorts.. Please note: wrestling shoes must be purchased separately. *A USA Wrestling card is required for all tournaments. The card will be held by [Club Name] as it is needed for all tournaments. The card is proof that your wrestler is a member of USA Wrestling and no wrestler is allowed to wrestle without it. This card must be presented at every USA Wrestling-sanctioned wrestling event that your wrestler attends, including CAGWA events. The USA wrestling card provides secondary insurance to your primary insurance carrier. At the time of registration, we ask that you please provide a copy of your wrestler’s birth certificate. A copy of the wrestler’s Birth Certificate is required to be shown at the wrestler’s first CAGWA tournament. Please provide a copy to [Club Name] to be kept with your wrestler’s USA card and please keep a copy in your purse or wallet at all times. Registration fee only covers the regular CAGWA seaon (December thru March) and does not include post season expenses. PRACTICE & TOURNAMENT INFORMATION Practices: Beginners Only: Mondays, Wednesdays from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at [Site High School]. Advanced: Tuesdays, Thursdays from 6:00p.m. to 8:00p.m. at [Site High School.] What Wrestlers Should Wear to Practice: All wrestlers should come to practice in either practice singlets or t-shirts and sweat pants or shorts. SHIRTS MUST BE TUCKED IN. Please do not let them wear clothing that has zippers, snaps or buttons. Do not let them wear jewelry such as earrings, necklaces or rings. Fingernails are to be kept short. It is permissible to wear tennis shoes at the beginning of the year; however, wrestling shoes are preferred. No hard soled shoes are allowed. Please bring a sweater for it will be hot during practice and cold when going home. Arrive to Practice on Time: Injuries can occur if not warmed up properly. It is important that wrestlers get to practice on time. Ringworm: WARNING – Wrestlers can minimize the chance of contracting and/or spreading ringworm to other wrestlers if they take a shower after each practice and after each tournament using an antibacterial soap such as Dial Liquid Soap. If the ringworm is present, also use an antifungal cream such as Blue Star ointment, Lotrimin, Desenex, etc. WRESTLERS DO NOT GO OUT ON THE MAT WITH RINGWORM! This is for everyone’s protection. At tournaments, the weigh-in chairperson for CAGWA is also instructed to check wrestlers before each tournament for possible signs of ringworm. CAGWA will not let wrestlers participate if they have any signs of a skin irritation that remotely resembles ringworm. A doctor should check any skin irritation and the wrestler obtain a medical release before the tournament. A doctor’s release form is necessary for the wrestler to compete again at CAGWA tournaments. Beginner Tournaments: These are for first-time wrestlers only. Wrestlers who competed last season are no longer eligible. Beginner tournaments usually consist of three tournaments during the month of December. Beginners are guaranteed three beginner tournaments each season. After the third beginner tournament, all wrestlers (advanced and beginners) will compete in the same age-weight divisions. [Club Name] encourages all first-time wrestlers to take advantage of the beginner’s tournaments. It is important to know in what division your wrestler will be. Age is determined by how old the wrestler will be in the year 2008. CAGWA’s tournament season officially begins on January 1. 2008. (See the updated age/weight & divisions chart shown below.) Be aware of your wrestler’s weight. Example: A wrestler weighing 90.5 lbs = 95 lbs. weight bracket: The same wrestler weighing 90 lbs = 90 lbs. weight bracket. (A ½ lb can make the difference in his/her weight class.) Wrestlers who are either too light or too heavy in their respective age groups may have a problem getting paired up with other wrestlers. A wrestler who is too light may wrestle an opponent who is 10 lbs. heavier. You are not obligated to wrestle a heavier weight. Alternatives are: 1) wrestle a heavier opponent, 2) receive a medal, or 3) get your money back. A wrestler who is too heavy may not have anyone to wrestle at that particular tournament. Alternatives are: 1) receive a medal, or 3) get your money back. Wrestlers with no matches may ask a [Club Name] coach to arrange for an Exhibition Match. CAGWA offers one type of wrestling style: Folkstyle (collegiate/high school wrestling). Match Time Limits: Three 1-minute periods or 1 min. periods with 30-second rest period between periods All CAGWA tournaments are held on Sundays except for Super Bowl Sunday weekend. The Super Tournament is held on a Saturday and Sunday (see the tournament schedule provided to you). There is an entry fee at each CAGWA tournament of $??.00 per wrestler. Super Tournament registration will be approximately $25.00. CAGWA also reserves the right to impose an additional $10.00 late charge at any tournament a wrestler enters after weigh- ins have officially closed. Parent will need to fill out a CAGWA competitor’s card for each wrestler at the first tournament he/she attends. Parents only need to fill out these cards once. At future tournaments, wrestlers will only need to show their USA card and birth certificate during registration. CAGWA will pull the wrestler’s competitor card and the wrestler will proceed to weigh-ins with the competitor card in hand. This card will keep track of each tournament your wrestler attends, including the weights your wrestler has competed in during the tournament season. It is also an official record for CAGWA in determining qualifications of a wrestler to enter the CAGWA Finals at the end of the season. All CAGWA wrestlers must qualify for the Finals. To qualify, wrestlers must have participated in a set number of CAGWA tournaments (including beginner tournaments and the Super Tournament). Wrestlers who have not participated in the required number of tournaments will not be allowed to compete in the CAGWA Finals. It is VERY IMPORTANT that wrestlers weigh in on time. Many families have their wrestlers weigh in early, then eat breakfast. [Club Name] recommends that your wrestler not leave the premises after weigh ins. After weigh ins have closed, the Age/Weight brackets are compiled. At the start of the tournament, the hosting club will begin announcing the age/weight divisions as they become available. Wrestlers will be instructed to go to the staging area, where the matches will be announced. Both wrestlers (who have been paired together) will then be asked to proceed to their assigned mat, where they will wait for the Referee Official to begin the match. It is the responsibility of all wrestlers to be ready when their matches are being called. Wrestlers who do not show up when the matches are called risk being forfeited from a match and/or a tournament. PARENTS SHOULD KNOW WHERE THEIR WRESTLER IS AT ALL TIMES. It is each wrestler’s (& their parent(s)’s) responsibility to listen for their name at staging. If the wrestler’s name is announced and the wrestler does not report, the wrestler may be disqualified for that round (this is considered a loss). [Club Name] coaches will be at all CAGWA tournaments to coach our kids. [Club Name] wrestlers should not begin a match without a [Club Name] coach. If a coach is not easily available, please have the referee hold the match and have an [Club Name] coach paged to come to your assigned mat. Throughout the season, opportunities may arise to travel to tournaments outside the area. These tournaments will be at your own expense. If funds are available, the club may (at our discretion) cover part of the wrestler’s expenses. SPORTSMANSHIP: [Club Name] expects good sportsmanship from all wrestlers and parents, including RKWC coaches and Board members. ***Do not embarrass your [Club Name].*** Wrestlers will show respect for all coaches and for other wrestlers both at practice and tournaments. Wrestlers will be required to shake the hand of their opponent, as well as the coach of their opponent after each match WHETHER A WRESTLER WINS OR LOSES. Respect school and personal property of others at practice and tournaments. Again, PARENTS SHOULD KNOW WHERE THEIR WRESTLER IS AT ALL TIMES! The following is considered unacceptable behavior: During practice: 1) Talking when the coach is talking; 2) Horse play: pushing, shoving, touching; 3) Fighting During Match/Tournament: 1) Fighting with opponent or team member; 2) Running around or climbing Sportsmanship: 1) Refusing to shake hand of opponent &/or other coach; 2) Hitting coaches, referees or parents; 3) Throwing a tantrum Discipline: Will be administered at the coach’s discretion and may include any of the following: 1. Warning by coach involved (ask another coach to watch); a. Sit-ups, push-ups, or other exercise (not to exceed five minutes); b. Sit wrestler down for 5 minutes; 2. Eject wrestler from practice (incident must be witnessed by 2 or more coaches); 3. Wrestler is forced to miss a practice; 4. Meeting with a club president, coaches, wrestler and parents; 5. Remove wrestler from tournament. CODE OF CONDUCT CAGWA considers good conduct by coaches, parents, and children to be an extremely important part of the program. The referee is responsible to call the match, but the coach is responsible for the behavior of spectators and team members. No one should be subjected to negative comments from anyone. Remember that referees have a difficult job at best and provide a valuable service that contributes to a successful season. We want all participants, coaches, referees, and children treated with respect so they will return next year. Remarks should be limited to POSITIVE comments. Remember, the match belongs to the kids, not the coaches, parents and/or spectators. Spectators, parents, coaches and wrestlers should refrain from making any negative, derogatory, or mean-spirited comments to or about children, other parents, coaches, CAGWA board or the referees. If there is a perceived problem, and the referee is willing, the coach may discuss it in a rational, positive manner. If a parent has a problem, it should be discussed in a calm manner after the match or at some other time. In any case, the wrestler should not be present. If you do not have a coach’s card, you are not allowed on the mats. Too many spectators on the mats leads to confusion and also makes it difficult for other spectators to view their wrestlers matches. CAGWA Board Members and Club Presidents carry red and yellow cards. Two yellow cards at one tournament and you will be told to leave and not be allowed at the next tournament. One red card and you will be told to leave, not allowed at the next tournament, and called before the CAGWA Board to see if any further action is necessary. Verbal threats, any striking or shaking of a child will be grounds for suspension as well as intervention by the local police. Please remember that we are all here for the kids. It is the wrestlers’ job to put forth their best effort at practice & tournaments and it is the parents’ job to support them and set a positive example.
