[INSERT DATE] Dear Parents, Welcome to a new year! The standards-based report card will continue to be the primary communication tool used to support your child’s academic growth this school year. This report card will help you understand your child’s achievement of the Hawaii Content and Performance Standards (HCPS) or the Common Core State Standards in English language arts and mathematics. The Standards clearly state what students are expected to learn and be able to do. After students have had the opportunity to learn, we examine their work to determine their overall grade. Grades will be given for each quarter and again at the end of the year. There are two unique grading scales used to reflect achievement of standards: Kindergarten MP DP NY / SC Meets with Proficiency Developing Proficiency Not Yet Not Applicable at this time See Teacher Comments Grades 1-6 ME MP DP WB NA SC Meets with Excellence Meets Proficiency Developing Proficiency Well Below Proficiency Not Applicable at this time See Teacher Comments Keep in mind that grades provide a summary of various sources of information and can only communicate one thing—achievement of the standards. So, other important information about your child will also be shared. Achievement is often related to students’ behaviors and habits. Our General Learner Outcomes, for all students, in all grade levels, are positive behaviors and skills that support high achievement. Your child will be rated on how often he or she displays these behaviors. Your child’s teacher may be sharing written comments to help you better understand your child’s achievement. Teachers may also make suggestions to help your child succeed. We want to include you as a partner in your child’s education. You can use your child’s academic grades, GLO ratings, and teacher comments to support your child so that they can succeed.
