In addition, bring whatever you are using to annotate (highlighters, Post-It notes, etc.). Absences, tardies, and how to get work you’ve missed: If you have an excused absence, you have as much time as you were absent to make up the work. For instance, if you missed four days due to illness, you have four school days to make up your work. I post homework daily in the classroom and on my website, so you should always have access to the assignments. The class website can be found at http://sharepoint.mvla.net/teachers/miag/AP%20Comp/Pages/default.aspx. If you need handouts, please come see me NOT during class. Please ask me to give you what you’ve missed before or after class, or during a break. And I mark tardies. Religiously. Restroom and cell phone policies I will start out giving you the benefit of the doubt. When you need to use the restroom, ask me and go. Cell phones should be turned off and not seen at all during the class period. How to contact me The best way to get ahold of me is always email. I am terrific at checking email and getting back to you in a timely manner. My email address is mia.glasman@mvla.net. (Please note there is only one ‘s’!) If you’d like to meet with me in person, please don’t just show up and expect me to be free. My prep periods this year are 6th and 7th periods. In addition, I am available during some lunches and after school. Please schedule an appointment with me ahead of time if you want to ensure I will be free. ASSESSMENT AND GRADING POLICIES: Assessments measure student progress toward proficiency and beyond in national Common Core Standard skill areas. Grade categories: Semester letter grades will be determined from formal assessments of a student’s proficiency in the following subject area standards: Writing: 30% Reading: 30% Listening and Speaking: 15% Language Functions 15% Work Habits: 10% Rubrics or scoring guides will explain proficiency criteria for all assignments. Grading scale – to be determined. Information forthcoming… On-line Gradebook: Grades are posted online for access by students and parents. Students should check their grades online regularly and communicate with their teacher about missing assignments or discrepancies. Work Habits: Work habits include timely and thorough completion of homework, personal accountability and focus. Work habits will account for 10% of the overall grade. Patterns of Proficiency: Students will have multiple opportunities to demonstrate proficiency for each skill taught. Students’ grades will reflect a demonstrated pattern of achievement rather than a cumulative average of all work, allowing grades to accurately reflect learning and improvement. Assignment Revision: Students are encouraged to revise writing and reading assessments to demonstrate proficiency on assessed standards. Revision time frame varies depending on the assignment. Missing or Late Work: Students will have the opportunity to make up missing work for proficiency grades in skill areas, but will lose credit in the “work habits” category. Students can expect to arrange with their teacher how and when work will be made up. Parents/Guardians: Please sign below to show you have read this document. Please feel free to contact me with questions. I look forward to working with your children!
