JOB SPECIFICATION
1. Summary of the broad purpose of the position and its responsibilities/duties.
The Graphic Designer reports to the Manager, Marketing and Communications for:
 delivering a range of responsive, creative and effective graphic design services and projects, which support a
consistent, professional and integrated image for the department
 coordinating and implementing a range of high quality graphic design projects and products
 delivering high level creative and technical skills and advice to clients, including applying a range of specialist
expertise, skills and knowledge relating to specific industry standards, software and hardware.
 maintaining effective relationships, and liaising effectively, with a wide range of industry, departmental and
government personnel and other stakeholders
 contributing to the effective organisation, operation and delivery of the Unit’s programs, strategies and objectives.

Deliver a range of responsive, creative and effective graphic design services and projects, which support a
consistent, professional and integrated image for the department by:

providing professional and creative graphic design and illustration services across a range of media, to
meet Department marketing and communications requirements, including ensuring that corporate brand
templates and formats are adhered to

coordinating and implementing a range of high quality graphic design projects and products, as required,
including preparing creative briefs, style guides and maintaining client communication to ensure briefs are
accurately interpreted and efficiently delivered

contributing to the ongoing delivery of high quality graphic design related publications and products that are
innovative, effective and efficient, including reviewing and addressing quality issues, as required

delivering high level creative and technical skills and advice to clients, including applying a range of
specialist expertise, skills and knowledge relating to specific industry standards, software and hardware

producing templates, layout design, illustrations, graphics, animations and creative solutions to support
interactive learning experiences across the Department

contributing to the effective maintenance of an image library and archive of design work, and other relevant
resources

contributing graphic design expertise for the development and review of the department’s promotional and
display signage, publications and materials

contributing to the identification, development and optimisation of marketing and communications
opportunities within the Department, and across other government departments and stakeholders

monitoring the work of contractors or consultants who have been engaged to support graphic design
activities, including identifying, addressing, and/or escalating, issues in a timely and appropriate manner

maintaining effective relationships, and liaising effectively, with a wide range of industry, departmental and
government personnel and other stakeholders, to support activities and events

contributing to the development and ongoing review of plans, tools and mechanisms that support the Unit’s
goals and objectives

contributing to the review of quality, effective published materials such as brochures, departmental
documents and online content to support effective communications and marketing outcomes

contributing to the ongoing continual improvement, and quality performance, of the Unit’s publications and
graphic design products, including assisting with processes to gain feedback and monitor client satisfaction
and outcomes.
Contribute to the effective organisation and operation of the Unit’s programs, strategies and objectives by:

participating in a team culture that supports the delivery of marketing and communications programs,
projects, services, products and materials that meet all agreed quality and performance objectives

participating in the evaluation of promotional materials, activities and performance

adhering to the provisions of relevant legislative requirements and government policies and protocols

contributing to the identification and implementation of opportunities and strategies that promote
departmental and portfolio priority issues across the Department.

Departmental delegations and policies define levels/limits of authority in relation to finance, human resources
and administrative requirements.
6. Position Challenges/Context
The position works in an environment with limited direction and operates as a member of a specialist team. The
environment in the unit is dynamic and creative so that activities and services remain responsive, flexible and
innovative. The environment can also, at times, be politically sensitive and demand current knowledge of policies
protocols and, as such, requires extremely high levels of confidentiality.
The position works within an area that is responsible for a number of critical functions by means of commitment
to organisational and Government policy and directions. The position operates within a very demanding work
environment, requiring multiple skills to achieve identified position outcomes.

Educational/Vocational Qualifications

Nil.
Personal Abilities/Aptitudes/Skills

Demonstrated ability to plan, schedule and prioritise work activities achieving objectives within required
timeframes and deadlines, and work independently, or as a member of a team, under limited direction in the
achievement of agreed objectives.

Sound interpersonal and communication skills to maintain effective working relationships with stakeholders,
provide advice and information, interpret and deliver on client briefs, and provide high level customer service.

Proven ability to identify, and develop effective creative solutions to, complex marketing and communications
issues.
Experience (including community experience)

Proven experience in developing, maintaining and reviewing promotional, marketing or communication materials
and delivering of a range of specialist graphic design services using the web, CD Rom, DVD/Video, computerbased and print-based materials.

Demonstrated conceptual and creative ability when working with a diverse group of clients with varying levels of
design experience and understanding.

Experience in creating illustrations and animations using applications such as Flash Actionscript, and in
graphical application programs including Photoshop, Illustrator, Freehand, InDesign, Flash and/or
DreamWeaver.
Knowledge
Technical:

Knowledge and understanding of print and online services, trends and developments and public relations,
marketing, media, communications, promotions and market research protocols.
Desirable Characteristics (To distinguish between applicants who have met all essential requirements ).
Educational/Vocational Qualifications

A relevant tertiary qualification in Graphic Design, Multimedia Visual Art, or a related discipline.


Knowledge of SA Government branding, communication and marketing policies and protocols
