We are seeking to appoint two enthusiastic bilingual teaching assistants, one of whom should
be a Polish speaker, to join our Ethnic Minority Achievement Team, based at the Curriculum
Centre in Newbury. The role will involve supporting newly arrived children from abroad, who
have little or no English, in West Berkshire Primary and Secondary schools. We would like to
hear from you if you if you are a fluent English speaker and have experience of working with
children. The ability to communicate effectively, use your initiative and be flexible, is as
important as experience and qualifications. The ability to drive is essential and an allowance is
made for travel.
Specific responsibilities will include:
 Working with children in the early stages of learning English
 Communicating with parents
 Translating and interpreting
 Making resources
 Supporting other members of the team

JOB PURPOSE
 To work under the direction of the Ethnic Minority Achievement Team to support
teachers in primary and secondary schools in meeting the needs of pupils in the early
stages of English and new arrivals
 To support bilingual pupils in learning and development
 To encourage the social and emotional development of bilingual pupils
 To support raising standards of achievement for pupils with EAL in West Berkshire
Schools
DESIGNATION OF POST AND POSITION WITHIN DEPARTMENTAL STRUCTURE




Bilingual Teaching Assistant based at the West Berkshire Curriculum Centre,
employed by West Berkshire Council and working with the EMAS team to support
pupils in West Berkshire Schools in the early stages of English and new arrivals
Report to EMA team manager and EMA consultant, West Berkshire School
Improvement Team and the Chief Adviser for Schools on services provided for West
Berkshire schools and pupils.
Line managed by the Ethic Minority Achievement Team Manager

MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Under the guidance of the EMA team, support teachers in:
 To work with teachers and to involve parents, carers and other staff/agencies in supporting
the acquisition of English for pupils with EAL
 Under the direction of the EMA team, to support simple assessments for pupils with EAL,
particularly new arrivals
 To communicate with parents of new arrivals, where appropriate, making translations and
interpreting
 To support the teaching of pupils in the early stages of acquiring English
 Under the direction of the EMA team, to support the making of resource boxes and helping
to implement lesson plans and preparation of materials in advance for new arrivals
 Helping bilingual children to become more independent
 Under the direction of the teacher and EMA team work with small groups of EAL children on
specific activities



To write notes of visit and keep up to date records
Implementing, monitoring and reporting back to the EMA team on the progress new arrivals
pupils
Additional Duties, attending EMA team meetings, writing notes of visit, Preparing and
issuing teaching materials and resources
