National Animal Welfare Trust Job Description Title: Registered Veterinary Nurse Location: Watford Salary: £10,200.32 Hours: 16 hours per week Term: Temporary maternity leave cover Reports to: centre manager Purpose of the post: To provide support to the Veterinary Surgeons in the medical and surgical treatment of the animals in the rehoming centre. Ensuring the smooth and efficient running of the vet unit. Liaising closely with the centre staff to enable all animals access to appropriate veterinary care. To provide nursing care to the animals in the hospital area. Advising adopters regarding medical problems, and general care of the animals adopted from us. Advising staff members from across the Trust on animal related matters. Key Duties and Responsibilities: 1. Vet Unit 1.1 Keeping the vet unit clean at all times 1.2 Drugs and equipment ordering 1.3 Organising equipment maintenance as per manufacturer’s schedules. 1.4 Cleaning and sterilising instruments and dental equipment 1.5 Undertake some schedule 3 procedures under direction of the veterinary surgeons 1.6 Prioritising cases to be seen by the veterinary surgeons 1.7 Provide advice and emergency care in the absence of the veterinary surgeons 1.8 Take animals to external vets if required 1.9 Provide nursing care to the animals in the hospital 1.10 Ensuring accurate records are kept of all treatments and procedures 1.11 Dispensing prescribed medication 1.12 Implementing treatment plans and prevention protocols 1.13 Completing Pet insurance documents 1.14 Very occasional out of hours or weekend work based on clinical need 2. Members of the Public 2.1 Advising potential adopters of the implications of adopting an animal with a pre existing medical condition. 2.2. Advising members of the public on animal care related matters. 2.3 Provide support with Pet Insurance queries. 2.4 Contacting new owners to ensure vaccination and neutering requirements are being met. 2.5 Communicate with members of the public regarding the health and welfare of the animals in our care. 3. Other staff 3.1 Build a close working relationship with the supervisors to ensure the veterinary needs of all animals are met. 3.2 Provide support to the supervisors in dealing with queries from the animal care staff, the receptionists and the public. 3.3 Provide details of veterinary procedures performed in the vet unit as requested by the centre manager, reception and head office staff. 3.4 Provide Staff training on Animal Health related matters if requested. 4. Vets 4.1 To provide assistance to the Veterinary Surgeons in the examination and treatment of the animals in the centre. 4.2 Ensuring the vets are able to work as efficiently and comfortably as possible. 4.3 Undertake diagnostic tests as directed by a Veterinary Surgeon such as laboratory tests and radiography 4.4 Prepare the Vet Unit for surgical procedures and assist the Veterinary Surgeon in all aspects of surgery. 4.5 Fulfil all reasonable requests by the Veterinary Surgeons to the best of your ability. 5. Other Duties 5.1 Ensure continuing registration with the RCVS. 5.2 Keep up your knowledge and skills through CPD. 5.3 Comply with all current veterinary legislation and Trust policies. 5.4 Attend internal and external meetings as requested. 5.5 Occasional Travel to other centres. 5.6 Keeping up to date with changing Trust procedures. 5.7 To maintain client confidentiality and abide by the Data Protection Act. 5.8 To promote a good image of the NAWT by maintaining a good standard of work, personal appearance and in communication with members of the public. 5.9 To carry out any other duties relevant to the post as directed by the centre manager . REGISTERED VETERINARY NURSE SPECIFICATION Experience/Skills Veterinary nursing experience Excellent communication and interpersonal skills Confident in Anaesthetic Monitoring Experienced in schedule 3 procedures The ability to organise and prioritise workloads IT skills ideally to include Microsoft Word and Outlook The ability to be flexible and work as part of a team Able to work occasional weekends as required Good practical nursing skills Empathy with the aims of the NAWT Flexible approach to working hours Good attendance record Full driving licence Desirable Essential Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes THE PERSON The ideal candidate will have experience in all aspects of veterinary nursing. They will be self motivated, flexible, hard working and reliable. A uniform is provided and must be worn during working hours.
