Crisman, DVM, MS, DACVIM Dr. Crisman received his DVM from the U. of Warsaw Poland. He earned an MS in Veterinary Medicine from Washington State University. From 1987-2010, Dr. Crisman served on the faculty of the V-MRCVM where he was a Professor in the Dept. of Large Animal Clinical Sciences and section chief of equine medicine and surgery. He was Director of the Molecular Diagnostics lab at the V-MRCVM. He has co/authored over 75 refereed publications and book chapters. His primary research interests include immunology, pharmacology, and inflammation associated with equine metabolic syndrome. In 2010, Dr. Crisman joined Veterinary Operations with Pfizer Animal Health. He is certified in acupuncture by IVAS, and is a well-known acupuncture instructor/lecturer. Note: this lab will be run in four identical 2-hour sessions; each session will be limited to 6 participants. Regenerative Therapies – Stem Cell Therapy: A New, LeastInvasive Method of Collection with Bimodal Treatment, an Overview of Stall-Side Platelet Therapy (E-PET), VetCell Protocol and Bone Marrow Collection (sponsored by Equine Partners America and Pall Animal Health) Shelly Zacharias, DVM, MS Dr. Zacharias received her DVM from Oklahoma State U. She has been involved in veterinary medicine from companion animal, equine and exotic animal veterinarian, to practice management, and the stem cell research industry. In 2010, after 6 years of private practice, she joined RenovoCyte Cellular Medicine as Director of Veterinary Operations. At RenovoCyte, Dr. Zacharias established the Wellness Banking® program for veterinary patients which allows clients to cryopreserve their pets’ stem cell-rich tissues that are usually discarded during routine procedures. She is now conducting clinical trials using allogeneic MSC’s for specific disease processes in hopes of having an “off the shelf” stem cell product in veterinary hospitals. Her special interests are in endocrinology, gastroenterology, geriatric medicine, and oncology, as well as regenerative medicine. Alfredo Romero, DVM, DACVS Dr. Romero received his DVM from Cornell University, and did a surgical internship at Hagyard Davidson Mcgee. While completing his residency program in equine surgery at UC Davis, Dr Romero spent a significant amount of time gaining experience with regenerative medicine and advanced imaging techniques including CT and MRI. After his residency, he worked as an associate surgeon at Mid-Atlantic Equine Medical Center in NJ before establishing Syracuse Equine Veterinary Specialists in upstate NY. Dr Romero has a special interest in sports medicine, advanced imaging and regenerative medicine techniques. Jeffrey Schaffer, DVM Dr. Schaffer received his DVM from the University of Perugia, Italy. After several years of teaching and veterinary practice, he joined Pall Biomedical Products where he held a variety of positions. He currently serves as Director of Pall Animal Health where he is responsible for new initiatives in the areas of regenerative medicine and cell/platelet therapy and launching these products in the veterinary market. He is the author of a range of published studies. This wet lab will cover the following areas: 1) A New Method of Stem Cell Collection Skin Punch Biopsies – the least invasive source for stem cell therapy to date 2) New Updates on Stem Cell Delivery A bimodal treatment regimen – an Intralesional stem cell injection at the site of injury shipped in patients’ PRP and IV injection 3) Science and review of the VetCell protocol 4) Demonstration, discussion and hands-on practice of the aspiration of bone marrow 5) E-PET (Equine Platelet Enhancement Therapy) The only stall-side delivery of platelet therapy available. Description and demonstration of the procedure on a live horse 8:00 AM–12:00 N Equine Musculoskeletal Radiography (sponsored by Sound-Eklin) Alex Valdés-Martínez, DVM, DACVR Dr. Alex Valdés-Martínez received his veterinary degree from the Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León, Mexico. Several years of equine medicine and surgery practice, both in private referral hospitals (México and Southern California) and academia (Louisiana State University) preceded three years of specialty training in veterinary radiology at the University of Pennsylvania. He currently serves as an Assistant Professor in Diagnostic Imaging at Colorado State University. Dr. ValdésMartínez’ special clinical interests are orthopedic and cancer-related musculoskeletal diseases in all species. Brooks, DVM, PhD, DACVO Dr. Brooks received his DVM from the University of Illinois. He received a PhD in glaucoma-induced optic nerve damage from the University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine, where he currently serves as a Professor of Ophthalmology. Dr. Brooks has received numerous teaching and research awards, and he is a recognized authority on infectious keratitis, corneal transplantation, and glaucoma of horses and other animals. Dr. Brooks has lectured extensively, nationally and internationally, on comparative ophthalmology and glaucoma, and was selected to present the Frank J. Milne State-of-the Art Lecture at the AAEP annual meeting in 201. He is past President of the American College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists. He has refereed more than 140 publications. Dr Brooks published the second edition of his book, Equine Ophthalmology, in 2008.
