Out of Class Reading Books
What is an Out of Class Reading Book?
An out of class reading book is a book that the student chooses to read outside of the
assigned classroom reading.
This year we will be reading the following novels:
The Pearl
Tom Sawyer
The Giver
Catherine Called Birdy
Tuck Everlasting
Please do not choose any of the above novels as an outside of class reading book.
What kind of book should a student read?
Students can read from any genre that they enjoy reading. They should pick a book that is
challenging, but not too challenging. Picture books, comic books, and magazines are not
acceptable choices for an out of class book.
When should students bring their book to class?
Students are required to bring their out of class book to Mrs. Kiffe's class every day.
They should bring also bring their books to all of their classes. It is wonderful to have
something to read when students finish work earlier than other students.
What should a student do if they have finished their out of class book?
Students should always have an out of class book. If they finish one book then they
should pick another book to read. Some students read one book a grading period; others
will read five, six or even more books.
Where can students get an out of class reading book?
Students can get books from the Florence Carlton Middle School Library, from home,
from a relative, from a book store, or even borrow a book from Mrs. Kiffe.
Will students ever have to do anything with their outside of class reading books?
Yes. Students will write one Literary Letter a week about their out of class book.
When will students read their out of class books?
Students will read for five to ten minutes at the beginning of every reading class. Students
will also read books when they finish an assignment early and have no other assignments
to work on.
