2011 TWAS-ROESEAP Symposium on Industrial Biotechnology Towards a Bio-based Economy of Developing Countries Aug 26-30, 2011 Beijing, China 0 2011 TWAS-ROESEAP Symposium on Industrial Biotechnology Towards a Bio-based Economy of Developing Countries August 26-30, 2011 Beijing, China 1 The 2011 TWAS-ROESEAP Symposium on Industrial Biotechnology will be held in the Congress Centre “Vision Hotel”, No.39 Xueyuan Road, Beijing, China from August 26-30, 2011. The Symposium will start with a Welcome Reception, a Keynote Lecture and buffet dinner on August 26 at 17.00 pm. The official closing date will be on August 29. Background and subject of the Symposium Global environmental problems and fuel crises have been promoting public attentions on development of biotechnological process and alternative sources for the production of fuels and chemicals. There is broad consensus that Industrial Biotechnology will play a significant role in sustainable chemistry, renewable energy, detergent, textile, food and feed industries. The recent financial crisis has provided even more incentive to boost national green growth initiatives and policies, whereas industrial biotechnology might underpin green growth and innovation worldwide. This is especially true in the developing countries where significant activity is taking place in the field of industrial biotechnology. The objective of this symposium is to review the most recent progress in the area of industrial biotechnology in developing countries. The symposium will provide a good opportunity for researches from the developing countries to exchange ideas, to share experiences, and to promote international collaboration to accelerate the commercialization of new products or new technologies. To achieve this, discussion will be focused on four major areas: (1) biorefinery of fuels and chemicals; (2) production of bulk fermentation products; (3) biocatalysis and biotransformation; (4) development of novel bio-based processes; and (5) New emerging disciplines including industrial systems biology and industrial synthetic biology. Introduction of the host organization The Institute of Microbiology, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IMCAS), is a leading research institute in the area of industrial biotechnology in China. “Create brilliance from tiny microbes" has become the motto of researchers of the institute for decades. Since its establishment in 1958, the institute has made tremendous contributions to solving the energy crisis, ensuring food security, protecting the environment, and supporting bio-industry development. The IMCAS has established a network of international collaborations that involves scientists from the US, Canada, Australia, Japan, Singapore, Russia, United Kingdom, France and other European countries. Through this symposium, IMCAS is aiming to further strengthen the collaboration with the 2 researchers from other developing countries. In 2005,Institute of Microbiology, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IMCAS) was selected as the CAS-TWAS Fellowship Training Programme Base. The CAS-TWAS Fellowship Program has been carried out smoothly during the past 5 years. IMCAS has received 13 scientists who were awarded CAS-TWAS Fellowships from many Third World countries such as Nigeria, Egypt, Senegal, Uzbekistan, Pakistan, Bangladesh, including 5 awardees of the Postgraduate Fellowship, 4 winners of the Postdoctoral Fellowship and 4 awardees of the Visiting Scholar Fellowship. IMCAS can provide multi-faceted training opportunities for those scholars from developing countries who wish to pursue advanced research and postgraduate training, postdoctoral research work in the fields of Life Sciences. IMCAS will continue to contribute significantly to research, teaching and academic exchange in microbiology in the Third World countries. Posters Poster abstracts should be submitted via the website (http://www.twasib.com) where instructions can also be found. The deadline for submission of abstracts is July, 1st, 2011. Contributions concerning industrial applications are encouraged. Abstracts should be written in English.
