GRADING SYSTEM --- Miss Johnsen’s MATH CLASSES --- Sept. 2012
KJohnsen@lin-wood.org
TESTS (45%) Tests are usually given at the end of each chapter and are always announced via the
assignment board at least one week in advance of the test date. Tests are not scaled and there is no re-test is
given.
Maximum extra time given is 20 minutes.
QUIZZES (20%) Quizzes are not always announced and may be given on the spur of the moment to check
how well you have progressed on homework and class work. You can figure on approximately one quiz per
week though at times it will be more or less often. Quizzes are not scaled and there are no re-takes.
Maximum extra time given is 10 minutes.
HOMEWORK (20%) Homework is assigned on a nightly basis or at the very least four times per week. It is
graded, you must show all work for full credit, and it is due at the beginning of every class. If homework is not
done, you will receive a HW Detention. “Do Now” and “Ticket to Leave” problems will be included in HW
grade.
Partial Credit can be received for homework.
1 day late=50% deduction
2 days late=grade of zero
CLASS (15%) This is a daily grade based on what I expect from you in-class. You can earn up to 3 points
daily; one each for being prepared, responsible, and respectful.
EXPECTATIONS
BE PREPARED
Bring needed books, pencils, notebooks, calculators, etc. with you to class. There are no locker passes.
BE RESPONSIBLE
Be on time. Pay Attention. TAKE NOTES. Use work time in class wisely. Complete work on time.
If you are having difficulty, come in for extra help!!!
BE RESPECTFUL
Raise your hand to ask or answer a question and wait to be recognized. Follow directions that are given. COMMON
COURTESY AND RESPECT FOR OTHERS IS A MAJOR EXPECTATION. There is no food, no drink, and no gossip
allowed in the classroom.
NOTEBOOK & BINDER are required for all classes. I recommend a notebook that is independent from all
other classes. Your notebook binder should be a portfolio collection of your work and should show progress
and learning. Your notebook & binder portfolio may be collected for a quiz grade on a regular basis.
Required Sections in your Binder
Class Notes (or accompanying notebook)
Calculator Notes (Alg 9B and Alg 11B only)
Homework
Returned Quizzes and Tests
PENCILS are required for all classes. All of your work must be done neatly in pencil. Bring one or two with
you to class every day along with an eraser. Work done in pen will not be graded and will be counted as late
when resubmitted.
If you are absent from school, you are responsible to get your assignments and to have them done in a timely
manner. In general, if you are absent one day, you will have one day to make up the missed work; two days
absent equals two days for makeup, etc. If you are absent only on the day of a quiz or test, the quiz or test will
need to be made up on the day that you return to school.
For extended periods of absence, check with me for a makeup schedule.
If you are away from school on a field trip, all work is required to be done BEFORE you go on the trip. This
includes homework, announced quizzes, and tests completed before you go on the field trip. Unannounced
quizzes will need to be made up no later than the next school day. WORK NOT COMPLETED AS
PRESCRIBED MAY BE GIVEN A ZERO GRADE.

Two Questions to help in understanding the Grading System…
Calculate the following grades given Miss.Johnsen’s Grading distribution. Tests (45%) Quizzes( 20%) Homework(20%)
Class work (15%)
1.
Johnny has great attendance, participates in class, and does all his class work and homework. His average class
work grade is a 92%. His average homework grade is an 88%. He is not as good at testing and has an average of
65% for quizzes and 55% for Tests. What does Johnny’s grade calculate out to be?
2.
Melissa is stellar with quizzes and tests. Her grades on quizzes for the first quarter were; 92, 96, 90, 95, and 89.
Her grades on tests were an 88 and 91. However, Melissa has many absences, leading to many missed HW
assignments, and it is not always present during class time, leaving her with an average of 55% for class work and
45% for home work. What does Melissa’s grade calculate out to be?
