The mission of the Rockford Area Arts Council is to support, promote, and develop the arts for everyone! We are pleased to offer the “Artists in Schools” Grant Program. When art becomes a partner in all areas of the curriculum, students become responsive and engaged learners. Through the arts you will be able to teach, reach, and engage students of all learning styles. You will create an exciting environment for students to deepen their understanding of the world and themselves and bring joy into your classroom! Rockford has a vibrant arts community ready to enhance your students' learning through the arts.
The “Artists in Schools” Program is available to all public and private schools in Winnebago
County. We offer five programs:
1.
"Artist-in Residence" Artists will create arts lessons with you for your class to enhance your curriculum.
2 . "Workshops for the Classroom" Artists have created workshops to present to your students in your classroom.
3 . " Arts Field trips" Your class goes on a field trip to an arts facility
4 . "SchoolTour" Local artist(s) perform for your school
5.
"Staff Development In-services" Artists present arts-integration ideas for use in the classroom
1. Read through the program offerings; select the program and artist(s) you wish and contact the artist(s) to plan the project.
2. Call Sharon Nesbit-Davis, Education/Outreach Director at 815-963-6765, if you have questions or need assistance in completing the form or designing your project.
3. Complete one of the five Grant Applications. There is a specific application for each program:
"Artist in Residence", "Workshops for the Classroom", "Field Trips", “School Tour" and “Staff
Development In-services".
4. Submit the application to the Arts Council. Grant must be approved before the project begins.
Artists will create and present arts lessons to address your curriculum needs. Select an artist from the roster, contact him/her to plan the residency and complete the Artist in Residency Application
Form (Note: Should you wish to request an artist not currently on our roster, please contact
Education Director, Sharon Nesbit-Davis at the Arts Council, 815-963-6765.) Apply early!
Deadline is January 18, 2008 for school year 2007-08. Grants are awarded on a first-come, first-served basis.
The grant for a residency will be evaluated on the following criteria:
Quality of active student involvement
Evidence that the residency is an integral part of the curriculum
Evidence of careful planning with the artist
Clearly stated and attainable student outcomes
Quality of faculty preparation and participation
Expense Budget
There is a simple expense budget to complete for the grant. It includes artist fees, supplies, and transportation (mileage).
Artist fee is $37.50 per hour. Residencies include planning time for the artist. The amount of planning time allowed is 15 minutes for every hour of student contact time.
Supplies are for consumable supplies purchased or provided by the artist for this project. Any supplies purchased for the project will remain with the school for follow up activities.
Mileage is allowed at the rate of 0.37 per mile.
Policies:
Videotaping or recording of artist presentations is prohibited.
Teachers must be present at all times during the workshop or residency.

Council and was an artist in residence at Spectrum School for nine years where she worked with classroom teachers to incorporate Howard Gardner’s theory on Multiple Intelligences throughout the curriculum.
Sharon celebrated midlife with a new concert titled “Mime in Mental Pause”.
Residencies: Students learn basic mime technique to create scenes, tableaus and short pantomimes. Reading, writing and science curriculum are used as inspiration for the created work. Residencies can conclude with a culminating performance.

Residencies: Peter begins by giving step by step instruction of drawing known cartoon characters and then teaching them how to create their own character. He has worked with students to create their own picture books that relate to curriculum i.e. cartoon characters and story of the solar system. One class created picture books to send to children in third world countries. He has also

Hands-on opportunities for students to learn from an artist in the classroom. Each workshop is designed by the artist to give an introduction to his/her art or teach a specific skill or concept or to enhance school curriculum. "Adventures in Architecture"

'The One Piece Pop-up Story"

Description: Each child folds a sheet of heavy paper and makes several cuts in a configuration of mountains and valleys. It forms an opening that resembles an animal; such as, a snake, a duck, a goose, a bird etc...Barbara will explain the basic story elements to the class and they will construct a short story that goes along with the animal that they choose as a class. Then each child will use this cut and folded paper as a cover for their short story that they have created as a group. They can decorate their cover to represent the animal they have chosen as a class and thus create their own book.

“Poetry and Art Workshops”

Description: On the first day, students will paint a large, colorful, abstract painting with watercolor paints. During this period, Barbara will read poems in several different forms, meters, and rhyme schemes. She will demonstrate the difference between prose and poetry; how it both sounds and looks on the page.
On the second day, the students will write their own poem choosing from these two topics:
“What animal would I like to be?” or “What animal would I like to have?”

In this workshop, participants will select a destination for their very own trip and will design a simple suitcase from construction paper. Inside they will pack items they want to take on their trip (glue pictures). After decorating the suitcase each will design 3 postcards with messages to someone back home, describing their trip. The focus will be on the details of Who? and What? of the trip, as well, the three parts of a plot. Follow-up activities include: continuing to write postcards, trip journaling, and using these aids to create a travel story.

“American Music Roots Breakout Sessions”
Description: small group interactive sessions for students go hand-in hand with Jim’s
Development of American Music through its Ethnical Roots” assembly (see “School Tours”).
These programs work together to provide a fun hands-on and highly informative intrinsic and interdisciplinary learning experience. The students will be engaged in the “living oral tradition” of fold music. Some activities include:
A “play circle” where students arranged in a circle perform world and homemade instruments with Mr. Kanas who accompanies on banjo. Students sing choruses and respond to cues. Students play clave, cuica, “boom-pipes”, “gut-bucket”, shakers, saw, dulcimer, “canjo”, drums, spoons and others.
The students will engage in “Juba rhythms” or body rhythms and learn the significance of triplets in African, jazz and Celtic influenced music.
The students will use traditional form and structure to organize their thoughts and application of compositional considerations such as theme and development, climax, texture, dynamics, connotation, suggestions and the elements of music, to give the piece direction and continuity.

Coppélia was brought to life through ballet in 1870 and is based on a story from "Tales of a Nutcracker" by E.T. Hoffmann. The story deals
with mistaken identity, a neglected lover and a mysterious doll maker named Doctor Coppélius. All participating classrooms will receive a study guide containing information about ballet, the production and suggested enrichment activities.

"Exploring Rigid Roles through Storytelling"
Ms. Peterson tells stories that illustrate how girls and boys can work together to create equality.
Women and girls emerge as heroes. This is a vital concept in this day and age since 99% of the heroes of past centuries were men and boys fighting dragons, armies, malevolent machines and such. The story of woman as hero achieves a new level with virtues and skills that are not dependent upon violence and force. The stories are rich with meaning and symbolism.

“A Writer and an Artist at Work”
Barbara Santucci shares her life as a writer and artist through slides and discussion using her books, Loon Summer and
Anna’s Corn.
She will share information about sources inspiration for her work from loons and farms, to her own paintings. Included will be a discussion of a writer’s responsibility to remember her or his own history—and to use writing as a vehicle for exploring what we love about our lives and what compels us to move forward.

She incorporates slides of corn fields during all three growing seasons and photos from a traditional Midwestern fair and a lively discussion/question and answer forum.
The slide presentation may be combined with a 30 minute workshop where Barbara will guide students in developing a class story. This story will include 6 basic story elements, characters, setting, conflict, resolution, ending, and a title.

The five Rockford Symphony Orchestra musicians’ presentation includes an introduction to the flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon and French horn with a variety of musical styles performed. The presentation also incorporates ISBE goals in language arts (4A, 4B), social studies (18A) and music (25A, 26A, 27 A&B). This lively and interactive program gives students a chance to hear live performance in their school.
