"Irritability, Pediatric Bipolar Disorder & Severe Mood Dysregulation" Presented by Kenneth Towbin, M.D. Sunday, March 16, 2014, 9:00 a.m. - 12:15 p.m. Workshop Level: All levels Program Description: Join expert Dr. Kenneth Towbin, M.D., Child & Adolescent Psychiatrist at NIMH, for an in-depth discussion of pediatric bipolar disorder, severe mood dysregulation, and the new DSM.5 diagnosis Disruptive Mood Dysregulation. Through the lens of the latest research, participants will explore the challenging symptom presentations often seen in children diagnosed with these disorders. Professionals will have the opportunity to compare the disorders through case presentations, and discuss diagnostic considerations and effective assessment tools. A review and dialogue of pharmacological and non- pharmacological interventions will follow. Learning Objectives: As a result of attending this workshop, it is expected that participants will be able to: 1. Understand and identify common signs and symptoms of severe irritability in children. 2. Recognize the differences between and nuances of Pediatric Bipolar Disorder, Severe Mood Dysregulation, and Disruptive Mood Dysregulation. 3. Explore treatment implications for these disorders. 4. Discuss assessment tips and guidelines for when working with children with these disorders and their families. About the Presenter: Dr. Towbin, M.D., is Chief of Clinical Child & Adolescent Psychiatry in the Emotion and Development Branch in the Intramural Research Program at NIMH. Dr. Towbin has extensive and diverse experience in child and adolescent psychiatry. He received his A.B. from Cornell University and his M.D. from University of Colorado. He completed his General Psychiatry Residency training at Yale University, and his fellowship training in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at the Yale Child Study Center. He then completed a two-year clinical psychiatric research fellowship at Yale School of Medicine. Dr. Towbin was on the faculty at the Yale Child Center as an Associate Professor and became the Associate Director of Training and Clinical Director at Riverview Hospital for Children. In 1993, Dr. Towbin came to Children’s National Medical Center (Washington DC) to become the Director of Residency Training in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and became Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, and Pediatrics at The George Washington University Medical School. He also was Medical Director of the Complex Developmental Disorders Team at Children’s National Medical Center. Dr. Towbin has authored on the diagnosis and treatment of Tourette Disorder, ObsessiveCompulsive Disorder, and Autism Spectrum disorders. His current research interests follow his affiliations with Drs. Daniel Pine and Ellen Leibenluft at NIMH Intramural Research Program focusing on the phenomenology and treatment of child and adolescent-onset Bipolar Disorder, severe emotional dysregulation, and anxiety disorders. Dr. Towbin is a Diplomat of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, in both General Psychiatry and in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. Dr. Towbin is also Clinical Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Science at the George Washington University School of Medicine. Dr. Towbin is a reviewer for the American Journal of Psychiatry, the Journal of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, the Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders, and the Journal of Child Psychiatry and Psychology. He also is a past member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. Continuing Education Credit: CE is granted to participants with documented attendance and completed evaluation forms. Attendance is monitored. Credit will not be granted to registrants who are more than 15 minutes late, are absent more than 15 minutes during the session, or depart more than 15 minutes early. A certificate for three CE credits will be awarded upon satisfactory completion of this workshop.
