i.
Introduction
This report is the evaluation on PI5USB1457A (BL option) and PI5USB1457B (BR option) and PI5USB266. Report is divided
to 2 parts - First is PI5USB1457B application evaluation and the secondary part is PI5USB1457A functional evaluation.
PI5USB266 is the 2 die version of PI5USB1457 but stick in auto detect mode (= SB#=0 of PI5USB1457). Also the D+ and Dvoltage is swapped between PI5USB266 and PI5USB1457. For PI5USB1457, D+=2.0V and D-=2.7V which is support Apple
mode only. After swapped the D+ and D- on PI5USB266, it supports iPad mode.

3.
4.
5.
Support both LOW speed and FULL speed mouse detection
Fulfill the CDP Primary and Secondary detection in BC spec rev 1.2
PI5USB1457B support the portable device with DCD function
USB2.0 HIGH speed eye diagram is marginal passed on the EVB
PI5USB1457B can charge the Apple iPod shuffle 2G Japan version (power ON) but it cannot charge the iPod shuffle 2G
Japan version (power OFF) and Nokia 6500C (power ON), which have same charging behavior of MAX14566E
 When a mouse was plug into OS in S0 then change to standby mode (S3) under CTL=0 and SEL=1 (auto S&C mode with
mouse / keyboard detection), D+/- is connected to Y+/-. After unplug the USB mouse from the USB port of PI5USB1457B
EVB, D+/- still kept the connection to Y+/- and not change to APPLE mode charger. (Confirmed the design with
designer).
This may have application issue as this USB port become dummy after unplug the mouse. The port can only resume when
OS back to S0. (We may need to put a note in datasheet on this setting)

PI5USB1457A (BL option) (please refer to P.21-34)
1. Compare with PI5USB1457B (BR option), PI5USB1457A (BL option) can charge more mobile device.
2. In portable HDD evaluation, when HDD was plugged into PI5USB1457A under auto S&C mode. INT pin didn’t change
when D+/D- status change therefore the OUT pin kept +5V all the time
PI5USB266 (please refer to P.24-25)
1. iPad can be charged with current > 1A (about 1.4-1.6A) on PI5USB266

D. Charging Downstream Power (CDP) test
According to the Battery Charging Specification Revision 1.2 (December 7, 2010), a charging downstream port is a
downstream port on device that complies with USB2.0 definition of a host or a hub. Also the port can detect whether
the CDP device is plugged in.
Primary Detection:
If a CDP senses a voltage greater than VDAT_REF (0.25 – 0.4V) but less than VLGC (0.8 – 2.0V) on its D+ line, it will
output a voltage of VDM_SRC (0.5 – 0.7V) on its D- line.
PD share compare the voltage on D- with VDAT_REF (0.25 – 0.4V). If D-> VDAT_REF, then PD is allowed to
determine that it is attached to either DCP or CDP
Secondary Detection:
A PD shall output VDM_SRC on D-, turn on IDP_SINK and compare the voltage on D+ to VDAT_REF. Since a CDP does
not short D+ and D-, the voltage on D+ will be close to GND, which is below VDAT_REF. If a PD detects that D+ is
less than VDAT_REF, it knows that it is attached to a CDP

Test 2: Functional evaluation USB mode with CDP/SDP
For PI5USB1457A (BL option): SB# = 1, CTL = M, SEL = 1
For PI5USB1457B (BR option): SB# = 1, CTL = 0, SEL = 1
Test procedure:
i. Plug the PI5USB1457 EVB (with SB# = 1) to the USB port of PC
ii. Boot up the PC to window OS
iii. Plug the mobile to the USB port of PI5USB1457 EVB
iv. Check whether the device can be detected by window OS
v. Monitor the current (by DMM) and the charging icon can be found on the mobile device

B. Portable HDD evaluation
TI’s part – was observed that OUT pin is kept ON and OFF when HDD was plugged into TPS2541 under charging
mode.
This part is to evaluate the behavior on PI5USB1457A (BL option) and monitor D+/D-, OUT pin of VBUS switch
when the portable HDD is plugged into charging mode.
Two brand of HDD were used in this evaluation:
1. Western Digital - WD Elements 320 GB USB 2.0 Portable External Hard Drive WDBAAR3200ABK-NESN
2. Seagate - Expansion 500 GB USB 2.0 Portable External Hard Drive ST905004EXA101-RK

PI5USB1457A
Test Procedure:
1. Set SB# = SEL = 0 and CTL3=M (Auto S&C)
2. Setup the equipment according above figure
3. Turn on the power supply
4. Set the passive probe to monitor OUT pin and D+/D- pin of PI5USB1457A
5. Set the trigger = falling edge of OUT pin in oscilloscope
6. Plug in the portable HDD to the receptacle connector of PI5USB1457A EVB and capture the waveform

Observation:
Unlike TPS2541, the INT pin on PI5USB1457A was not affected by D+/D- status change, so that OUT pin of Vbus switch can keep
+5V without change.
