Tooth loss and quality of life in the elderly”

To consider the impact of tooth loss on oral and general health-related quality of life and life satisfaction in elderly people.

To outline the effect of various treatment options on their quality of life and life satisfaction

To summarise approaches to treatment which may improve their quality of life and life satisfaction

Dr Anthony Kravitz OBE: “CDA Strategy 2012 – Going Forward”

 to discuss the CDA’s past strategy

 to explain the strategy devised by the Executive in 2012, and how this has been implemented, so far

Mr Noam Tamir: “Breaking down the distance barrier using blended learning: the

Smile-On experience”

Learning objectives:

 understanding what is blended learning and how it can be used

 understanding how blended learning can add value to each association and the CDA

Dr Stephen Lambert-Humble MBE: “Using all the available learning tools in the 21st century”

Learning objectives:

 to consider cost effective methods of using learning material from experts from around the world

 to gain knowledge about the Safeguarding of Vulnerable Adults, Consent, and Child Protection

OVERALL OBJECTIVES OF THE WORKSHOP

1. To evaluate the epidemiology of Oral Health and Oral Disabilities of the Elderly in the

Commonwealth countries.

2. To review the Oral Health needs of the Elderly in the Commonwealth countries.

3. To consider the challenges of providing good oral health for the Elderly in the Commonwealth countries.

4. To review the current techniques in the treatment of common dental ailments in the Elderly

This event will provide 5 hours of verifiable continuing professional development .

Speaker biographies

Dr Sue Greening

Sue qualified in 1977 in Cardiff and has been working in the UK in both Hospital and

Community Dental Services throughout her career. She is presently a Consultant in

Special Care Dentistry in Aneurin Bevan Health Board, South Wales where she is also

Clinical Director of the Community Dental Service which provides services for vulnerable groups in society. She is Past President of the British Society for Disability and Oral Health and has always been passionate about reducing inequalities in oral health particularly for vulnerable and disabled people. She teaches undergraduate and postgraduate students and lectures in this field both in the UK and internationally.

She has always worked for dentistry in the wider context and was honoured to become President of the British Dental Association in 2006. She is presently member of the CDA Executive Committee as European Vice President. Sue is also currently a

Council member of the International Association for Disability and Oral Health and a

Board member of Dental Protection Limited.

Dr Tope Esan

Dr. Temitope Ayodeji Esan was born in South West Nigeria in 1967. He graduated from Faculty of Dentistry, Obafemi Awolowo University in 1992 with a Bachelor of

Dental Surgery (B.Ch.D.) He completed his postgraduate training in 2001 with the award of Fellowship in Dental Surgery of the National Postgraduate Medical College of

Nigeria.

He became a lecturer at the Obafemi Awolowo University in 2002 and teaches prosthodontics to undergraduate and postgraduate students. He is also involved in research and has over 30 publications in both local and international peer reviewed journals.

Presently, he is an Associate Professor in the Department of Restorative Dentistry and the Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Dentistry, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife. He is a

Honorary Consultant prosthodontist at the university. He is also the chairman of the

Curriculum Review Committee of the Faculty of Dentistry, National Postgraduate

Medical College of Nigeria.

He likes football and travelling and is happily married with children.

Dr Graham Gilmour

Graham Gilmour is Consultant in Restorative Dentistry and Lead Clinician for Surgery at Croydon University Hospital in London, and also provides outreach Consultant

Services to a number of other Trusts. He is Associate Dean For Post Graduate Dental

Education at Kent Surrey and Sussex Deanery, with responsibility for Secondary

Care, and is a renowned speaker lecturing all over the world on all aspects of

Restorative Dentistry but especially removable prosthodontics.

Dr Anthony Kravitz OBE

Anthony Kravitz qualified in 1966, at the age of just 21 years. He was in general practice from 1967 until 2005.

He was the President of the British Dental Association (BDA) 2004-05. From 1997 until 2003 he was the chief negotiator for the UK's NHS General Dental Practitioners.

He has also chaired several BDA committees, including the dental auxiliaries’ committee. He has lectured in many countries and also has represented the BDA at very many overseas meetings.

Since December 2003 he has been the Honorary Treasurer of the Commonwealth

Dental Association.

Dr Kravitz is an Honorary Research Fellow in Cardiff University and in 2005 completed a Master’s degree related to the use of dental auxiliaries. In 2007 he completed a survey of dentistry in the Commonwealth, which is published on the CDA’s website.

In 2004 he co-authored his first book, the EU Manual of Dental Practice, which was updated in 2008 and 2009.

Dr Kravitz was awarded the OBE in December 2002.

Mr Noam Tamir

Graduated in Computing and Industrial Management Engineering at the Technion in

Haifa, Israel, he has since had extensive experience in computer services, management and marketing, and in providing education. He founded the Healthcare

Learning Company (HLC) in 2000 and over the last 10 years has watched Smile-on grow to become one of the leading education providers in the UK and beyond.

Outside of work he is a fellow of the Royal Society for the encouragement of Arts,

Manufactures and Commerce (RSA). He is active in various charities as well as being a trustee of the Sternberg Foundation and other trusts. He is also a member of the

London Rotary Club and the Royal Society of Medicine (RSM). My hobbies include playing the saxophone, listening to jazz and classical music, watching theatre productions and painting and collecting art. He also enjoys mountain hiking.

Professor Stephen Lambert-Humble MBE

Stephen Lambert-Humble had a full career in the Royal Navy culminating in him being the first Dental Dean for all the UK Armed Forces. He left the Royal Navy in 2003 to take up his current post of Dean of Postgraduate Dentistry for South-East England. He is also the UK National Lead Dean for Dental Care Professionals and a Consultant in

Dental Public Health. He manages all the dental education and development in his area, and is a passionate supporter of skill-mix. He has twice been Vice Dean of the

Faculty of General Dental Practice (UK) at the Royal College of Surgeons of England.

He has chaired the National Examination Board for Dental Nurses, set up the Advisory

Board for Dental Care Professionals, Examination Boards for Dental Hygienists, Dental

Therapists and Clinical Dental Technicians, and was awarded an MBE for services to

Dental Care and Education in the 2012 New Year Honours List.
