2. The aim of the Competition
Chinese Speech Competition aims to support language maintenance for all native Chinese speakers
and Chinese speakers as the second language, especially for young generation; to encourage the
learning, teaching and use of Chinese language in Manawatu region; to educate wider public on
Chinese Language and Culture. The competition will give learners of Modern Standard Chinese
(Mandarin) the opportunity to effectively express their ideas in Mandarin, display their language
skills in a challenging context and gain confidence in using the language and the opportunity to
listen to the speeches of other students.
3. Terms and Condition
All Chinese Language (Mandarin) students, either attending a Chinese School, tertiary institution
or studying Chinese privately are invited to participate in 4th Manawatu Chinese Speech
Competition 2010. Participants may choose any topic they wish and perform in nursery rhyme,
story or monologue. Singing or karaoke performances are not permitted.
Time Limits - Speaking time shall be between two and four minutes.
4. Judging Criteria & Adjudicators
The three judging criteria (presentation, content and language) will be used

All adjudicators are Chinese language education and study professionals.
5. Date:
Competition will commence at 1:30 pm, Sunday 3 October 2010
All entrants must report to the Registration Desk 20 minutes prior to competition commence time.
Speech Competition
1.30pm – 3.30pm
Adjudicators’ Report and Prize-Giving
3:30 pm –4.30pm (approximately)
Prizes will be awarded to the first and second place winners in each category. More Incentive
Awards will be presented as well. All competitors will receive the special gift.
6. Venue:
1st Floor, Palmerston North Convention Centre
354 Main Street, Palmerston North
Chinese dances and singings will be performed before prize giving. All families
and supporters are welcome.
7. Applications and Deadlines
There is no entry fee.
