EFSA HIGHLIGHTS 22 January 2013
Over the past 10 to 15 years, beekeepers
have been reporting unusual weakening of
bee numbers and colony losses. No single
cause of this decline has been identified, but
several contributing factors have been
suggested. These include the effects of
intensive agriculture and pesticide use,
starvation and poor bee nutrition, viruses and
invasive species, genetically modified plants,
and environmental changes.
Why are bees under threat?

EFSA publishes provisional grants and procurement list
EFSA has published a provisional list of projects that it plans to put
out for tender in 2013 under its grants and procurement programme.
The calls for external support, which are part of EFSA’s scientific
cooperation strategy, help the Authority to respond more effectively
and flexibly to its growing workload, particularly in the core areas of
data collection, provision of scientific advice and evaluation of
regulated products.

News in brief
Topic: Pesticides
Understanding Science
The term “pesticides” is often used as a
synonym for plant protection products, which
are mainly used in agriculture to keep crops
healthy and prevent them from being
destroyed as a consequence of disease and
infestation. EFSA’s job is to evaluate whether
these products have any harmful effect on
human or animal health.
What are pesticides and how do they get
into our food?
Annual Management Plan 2013
