DRAMA
S1/2
Homework for drama in S1/2 is given on a regular basis but the type and style
can be varied. Pupils are often asked to make notes regarding their class
work. This could be from a brief character description to a more extended plot
outline. The homework tasks should take no more than around 20 minutes per
week.
S3/4
Pupils who take drama in S3/4 are opting into nationally examined courses
and much of the homework delivered will be to support the preparation for
national assessment. The amount of homework given will increase gradually
over the two years. In S3 pupils can expect around 20 minutes per week while
at the end of S4 this could increase to 1 hour per week. The amount of
homework issued will also depend on the ability of the individual pupil.
Pupils in S3 may be asked to make notes, outline character/plot and complete
vocabulary/terminology exercises. In S4 the homework given will be much
more directly aimed at national assessment; pupils will be asked to complete
written worksheets and examination type questions.
S5/6
Homework forms a major part of drama in S5/6. Pupils studying at
Intermediate 1, Intermediate 2, Higher and Advanced Higher are all expected
to carry out a certain amount of individual research and preparation and this is
particularly true in the ‘Devised Drama’ units.
Higher and Advanced Higher drama requires pupils to write essay type
answers to given questions. This could extend from around 1 hour week to
around 3 hours per week closer to exam time.
NB Although there is extended writing at all levels, drama remains very much
a practical subject and much of the homework expected from S5/6 pupils will
be in the form of rehearsals either at lunchtime or after school. This will
increase significantly during the external practical exam diet from March to
May.
