COURSE DESCRIPTION: Study and Appreciation of the various periods in the history of art and the materials and methods used by artists.
REQUIRED TEXTBOOK: A World of Art by Henry
Sayre, 5 th Edition
LEARNING OUTCOMES:
1.
At outcome, students will demonstrate the use and understanding of the basic vocabulary used for discussing and evaluating art.
2.
At outcome, students will be able to use newly acquired information, to think critically about art, discussing their opinions coherently.
3.
At outcome, students will recognize the value of art to society using various examples to support their reasoning.
CORE ABILITIES: A core ability is a WWCC campuswide attitude or skill that faculty agree should be taught across the curriculum. The core abilities are:
COMMUNICATION, CRITICAL THINKING,

PERSONAL AND PROFESSIONAL RESPONSIBILITY,
DIVERSITY/APPRECIATION OF DIFFERENCES,
INFORMATION/TECHNOLOGY, and LIFELONG
LEARNING. Various parts of the class will relate to the core abilities and integration of these will also be part of the class outcomes.
TYPES OF INSTRUCTION: Lecture, Discussion, Handson Projects, DVD’s, and Gallery Visits.
EVALUATION DEVICES: Weekly assignments, gallery reviews, group research project, midterm exam, final exam.
GRADING: Attendance is required and is a large portion of your grade. There will be weekly chapter readings and assignments. The point system is as follows:
POINTS POSSIBLE: 1000
ASSIGNMENTS:
Weekly Study Guides, 10 x 35 points = 350
Gallery Reviews, 4 x 25 = 100
Hands on Projects, 4 x 25 = 100
ATTENDANCE: 50 class days x 3 = 150
MIDTERM exam: 100
FINAL exam: 100
GROUP PROJECT: 100 [early in the quarter the class will be divided into groups. Each group will be assigned a theme from the text. Each group is responsible for
“teaching” that theme to the rest of the class. An entire class period will be scheduled for each group presentation]

Some assignments and point distributions may change, but the total will still add up to 1000 points

NOTE: Late Study Guides and Gallery reviews will have 5 points deducted for each day late.
ATTENDANCE: You are allowed two unexcused absences. After that, 3 points will be deducted for every day missed. Gallery reviews beyond those required may be done to make up each missed absence. You are responsible for any content you miss when you are gone. Should a
FAMILY EMERGENCY or ILLNESS cause you to miss an extensive amount of class I am willing to excuse your absences, but it is up to the student to contact me and discuss the situation. Everyone should have a study group with at least three people they can call or e-mail to get the notes and content missed. Every day counts. Some

questions on the midterm and the final will be based on class discussions, so you never know what you may miss!

If you are a parent with a sick child etc. and need to use the phone in an emergency, please leave the classroom. If you use your cell phones for text messaging or any other use during lectures and class projects you will be asked to leave the class and you will lose the points for that days attendance.
