MOUNT DIABLO METAL DETECTING CLUB

August 2010

PRESIDENT KEN HOUSFELD

V. PRES FRANK STRATTON

SECTRETARY JAMES LIND

NEWS LETTER BOBBY WHITWORTH

TREASURE JIM STOCKTON

THERE WAS A TOTAL OF 45 MEMBERS AND GUEST AT THE AUGUST MEETING.

The Boy Scout helper hunt 2010 was a great success. We started the day at HTB for breakfast as usual. After breakfast we had a surprise and found Art in the parking lot. We all had a chat and then we were off to hunt. Before meeting the scouts we went to Refugio Valley Park in Hercules.

There some of us found gold rings and some rings made of ???. There was a lot of clad coins found. For some reason the field was soaking wet. When you walked in certain areas you could be up to your neck in water. Then it was off to Victoria Park. We pre-hunted the field and found lots of last year’s coins. Then we had a nice lunch. Thanks to Jeff and all your helpers. It was great. Next we had show and tell. This really excited a lot of the scouts. How could all that stuff be in the ground? And what about all those foreign coins in the ground, the question was asked.

The answer from one scout was they worked there way through the ground from that country.

Makes sense to me.

There were enough of us to each be with a scout and do it in one session. Jeff must have had

300-400 targets on the field. Pennies and more pennies. Red one, Blue ones, Green ones and .....!

After the hunt they all turned in there coins. NO ...WAY. There were still 30 coins on the field so back we went to find some more. After it was all over there was only 5 pennies not found. Must have been on there edges. It was a great day and lots of fun. Many MDMDC ers where there and after the hunt we told stories and talked about fun things to do in the future.

Joy Walding is collecting pull tabs from aluminum cans. She is donating these to the Ronald

McDonald House. Please save your tabs!!!!

I have some great news for a lot of us. The silver quarter raffle was not won last month and will carry over to the Sept. meeting. Sigh up by paying $2.00 or a silver quarter. Don’t forget to sign the list. Sorry to John F for not being at the last meeting.

There was a quiz taken recently. There was no one that got them all right. Many only missed one. Stay tuned for a tie breaker. The correct answers were

Jerry Hallet-Gold chain/bracelet 51 bracelet

Ray-Dump Tonopah, NV

Gary-Club founder 1979

Jim-Blind camp 17 years

Ken-July Mini-maxi hunt

Reggie-Red purse

John Fabris-Puts it on web site.

Julie-1909 penny Tonopah

Big raffle winners at the last meeting were Steve Bava and John Young.

Jim Stockton made some presentations at the last meeting to those that have worked behind the scenes at the Blind Camp. They provide prizes or hand out prizes, help the kids get back to there correct counselors, take photos and pretty much do whatever Jim tells them to do. They are Joy Walding, Julie Romeo, Dana Russell, Lisa Whitworth,

BobWestlund and Pat Westlund. Thanks to all of you.

Beautiful hunting in San Rafael. Janice found a slightly bent silver ring which was very cute. Leonardo found a gorgeous 14k ring with diamonds and rubies (?). There were lots of coins found by all. If you are looking for a great place to take the family or just to chill I recommend McNear's Beach in San

Rafael...swimming, hiking, sunbathing and metal detecting. Must return with picnic supplies !!! Story by Sandy Cameron.
