SECTION 07 55 63 Green Roof Systems
SPECIFIER NOTE: This product guide specification is written according to the Construction
Specifications Institute (CSI) Format, including MasterFormat, SectionFormat, and PageFormat, as
contained in the CSI Manual of Practice.
The section must be carefully reviewed and edited by the Architect to meet the requirements of the
project and local building codes. Coordinate this section with other specification sections and the
drawings.
Delete all italicized "Specifier Notes" when editing this section.
This section covers standard green roof modules manufactured by Eco-Roofs, LLC. For assistance with
specific product applications, please contact the manufacturer. Detailed technical information, including
installation guidelines, may be obtained from Eco-Roofs, LLC corporate website at http://www.ecoroofs.com/system-specs. Contact the manufacturer for additional information and for assistance in editing
this section for your specific application.
PART 1: GENERAL
1.1. SCOPE
A. Furnish all equipment, materials, tools, and labor to install Eco-Roofs, LLC standard green roof
modules provided by Eco-Roofs, LLC. Modules to include growth media and sedum plant mix
grown by an Authorized Eco-Roofs Grower.
SPECIFIER NOTE: Include green roof accessories as shown on the Drawings or directed by the Project
Engineer. Delete those not specified.
B. This work shall also include custom shaping of modules, installation of slip sheet/root barrier,
irrigation system, paver stones or ballast, edge treatments and drain covers.
1.2 RELATED SECTIONS
A. Drawings and general provisions of the Contract, including General and Supplementary
Conditions and Division 1 Specifications, apply to this section.
1.3 DEFINITIONS
A. Vegetated Roof: An area of planting and landscape, built on a waterproofed substrate at any level
that is separated from the natural ground by a man-made structure.
B. Vegetated Roof System: The complete system of materials including drainage layer with growth
media and live vegetation, which functions to provide a watertight protected membrane and an
Extensive or Intensive vegetated roof design to assist in storm water management, energy
conservation, and a long-term life-cycle expectation.
C. Extensive Green Roof: Low maintenance landscaping consisting of shallow soil depths <6 inches
with plant varieties that are restricted primarily to sedum groundcovers that can withstand harsh
conditions and are suited to the area of planting.
D. Intensive Green Roof: A complex landscaping ecosystem requiring regular maintenance
consisting of deep soil depths >6 inches with plant varieties that include perennials, shrubs and
trees that are suited to the conditions in the area of planting.
E. Growing Medium: A growing media composed of composted organic matter and lightweight
porous aggregate.
F. Green Roof Modules: Trays designed to allow pre-growing of the green roof prior to installation
and easier mobility
1.4 SUBMITTALS
A. Shop Drawings: Submit scaled shop drawings including plan of installation area, location of drain
covers, and location of edging and construction details at critical terminations of vegetated roof
system with adjacent construction. Include flashing connections to planter system, pavers, and
building systems.
B. Product Data: Submit manufacturer’s published product data for vegetated roofing systems,
components and media type with descriptive published data indicating characteristics and
limitations.
C. Planting Mix Design: Include standard details, system components, and proposals for plant types
and characteristics.
D. Manufacturer Instructions: Include manufacturer’s installation instructions, special procedures,
and conditions requiring special attention.
E. Certifications: Written submittal by manufacturer indicating that installer is certified as qualified to
perform work of this Section.
F. Warranty: Submit manufacturer’s standard warranty. Ensure Owner’s name is registered with
Eco-Roofs, LLC.
G. Maintenance Instructions: Upon completion of the installation, submit written recommendations
for maintenance of all portions of the vegetated roof system. This report shall include a
maintenance schedule for weeding and continued fertility corrections and plant needs. Also
include instructions for when, how much, and how often to water the plants.
H. LEED Certification: Conform to required documentation of LEED Credits contributing to
Certification of Project under USGBC LEED requirements.
1.5 QUALITY ASSURANCE
A. Single Source Responsibility: Provide green roof modules with growing media, plant materials,
and maintenance for stipulated period as a single system by or under direction of vegetated roof
manufacturer.
B. There shall be no deviation from this specification or the Drawings. Installer assumes liability for
any deviations from specifications and/or Drawings.
C. Installer Qualifications: Certified as pre-approved and qualified by vegetative roof manufacturer to
install work of this Section.
D. Preconstruction Testing: Conduct to verify following:
1. Membrane Roofing Manufacturer: Conduct inspection by certified manufacturer’s
technical representative to verify that the in-place membrane roofing system meets the
entire manufacturer’s specifications, is waterproof, and is approved for installation of the
Eco-Roofs, LLC vegetated roof tray system. Verify protection course and other
requirements to maintain warranty provisions. A copy of the inspection report shall be
submitted to Eco-Roofs, LLC prior to the installation of the Eco-Roofs, LLC vegetated
roof system.
2. Flood Test: Conduct 24 hour flood test under provisions of applicable membrane roofing
section or under work of this section by Owner’s roofing inspection agency to waterproof
and weather tight condition. Flood test shall be attested in writing to Eco-Roofs, LLC by
the roof installer prior to any Eco-Roofs, LLC modules being installed.
E. Slip sheet/protection layer to be properly installed, seams overlapped and bonded as necessary,
in accordance with architect’s and manufacturer’s specifications.
F. Once the Eco-Roofs, LLC installation is completed, an inspection is to be conducted by a
technical representative to verify that the Eco-Roofs, LLC modules have been installed properly.
1.6 DELIVERY, STORAGE AND HANDLING
A. Delivery:
1. Deliver the Eco-Roofs, LLC modules to the site in good condition free from shipping
damage in manufacturer’s original, unopened packaging, with labels clearly identifying
product name, manufacturer, and location of installation. Upon delivery, materials shall
be inspected for damage. Deficient materials shall not be used.
2. Conduct roof top delivery, assembly, and storage of each component of Eco-Roofs, LLC
modules under direction of authorized Installer. Modules are to be installed on the roof
immediately upon project delivery. Any plastic wrapping should be removed to prevent
overheating in the sun.
C. Storage:
1. Maintain health of plant material as recommended by nursery guidelines prior to rooftop
installation.
2. Store green roof modules and materials over plywood panels or protective sheeting. Do
not allow products, growing media, grit, debris, and pedestrian traffic on unprotected
roofing.
3.
Provide water source for irrigation of and maintenance of plants.
D. Handling:
1. Eco-Roofs, LLC modules are to be handled to prevent damage to the modules
themselves and all roofing components.
2. Take measures to locate and spread loads in a manner to not exceed load capacity of
the roof deck.
3. Eco-Roofs, LLC modules are to be conveyed to the roof surface with equipment that is
designed to carry the collective load of the modules. Account for decreasing load limits
when boom (of crane or fork lift) is extended. Use crane stabilizers and take all
necessary precautions to protect building and personnel.
4. During installation, protect the roof deck and membranes with appropriate material such
as plywood sheeting. Never scrape or puncture the slip sheet or membranes. Keep roof
surfaces free of soil, grit, or debris at all times with a broom. Never set Eco-Roofs, LLC
modules on top of soil, dirt or grit.
1.7 WARRANTY
A. Tray warranty: Against photodegradation for 20 years. See the Eco-Roofs, LLC Warranty for
limitations and details.
B. Plant warranty: Plants shall be healthy with 95% coverage in trays upon arrival. See EcoRoofs, LLC to allow adequate pre-growing lead time.

C. Plant warranty without irrigation – 1 year. See the Eco-Roofs, LLC Warranty for limitations and
details.
E. Plant warranty with irrigation and maintenance package – 3 years. See the Eco-Roofs, LLC

PART 2: PRODUCTS
2.1 MANUFACTURER

B. Substitutions: Not permitted.
B. Requests for substitutions will be considered in accordance with provisions of Section 01 25 00.
2.2 MODULAR TRAY
A. Performance/Design Criteria: Engineer to:
1. Create system of modular drainage trays.
2. Eliminate need for additional drainage material and filter fabric.
SPECIFIER NOTE: Delete section if 4” or 6” biodegradable trays not specified.
3. 4” and 6” trays (nominal tray depth) contain a biodegradable liner which will degrade over
time to create a deeper soil profile in the nominal 3.3” plastic base tray.
B. Tray Size: 12” x 24”
C. Nominal Depth: [3.3” standard] [4” with biodegradable liner] [6” with biodegradable liner]
D. Material: 100 percent recycled high density polyethylene (HDPE, minimum 100 mil thick side
walls.
E. Drainage: Multiple drainage holes in the bottom of the tray with minimal water reservoirs to allow
adequate drainage of excess water. Drainage channels in the bottom of the tray to allow free flow
of excess water in both directions.
F. Maximum Weight:
1. Eco-Roofs, LLC green roof module with Fully Saturated Media and Mature Plant Foliage:

2.3 BIODEGRADEABLE LINER
SPECIFIER NOTE: Specify one of the following. Delete paragraph if biodegradable liner not specified.
A. Dimensions:

B. Material: 100% recycled molded Coir.
2.4 GROWING MEDIA
A. Meets German FLL Green Roof Guidelines.
B. Engineered light-weight blend consisting of inorganic and organic components to assure optimal
health of plants in a green roof environment.
2.5 PLANTS
A. Eco-Roofs, LLC plant mixes are composed of highly drought resistant ground covers and plant
varieties that are suited to the local conditions in the area of planting, and are selected to conform
to USDA hardiness zone classification and regional horticulturalist recommendation and as
accepted by Architect.
B. Plants shall be installed in accordance with landscape design on plans.
C. Plants shall be properly adapted and acclimatized to conditions at the installation site.
2.6 GREEN ROOF ACCESSORIES
A. Slip Sheet/Protection Sheet: Protection sheet is to be installed as recommended or approved by
both roofing system and Eco-Roofs, LLC for use with green roof module installation.
SPECIFIER NOTE: Specify one of the following.
1. Minimum Protection: 8oz Nonwoven geotextile
1. Minimum Root Barrier Protection: 20mil or thicker (30-40mil recommended) plastic or
rubber sheeting. Linear Low-Density Polyethylene (LLDPE) or High Density Polyethylene
(HDPE). For full root barrier protection seams must be sealed according to the
manufacturers recommendations or overlapped a minimum of 24”.
1. Best Root Barrier Protection: 40mil or thicker EPDM (ethylene propylene diene monomer)
or TPO (Thermoplastic polyolefin) rubber/plastic roofing membranes. For full root barrier
protection seams must be sealed according to the manufacturers recommendations or
overlapped a minimum of 24”.
SPECIFIER NOTE: Delete paragraph if edge treatment not required. Edge treatment or some type of
perimeter restraint is necessary for Eco-Roofs, LLC modules with the biodegradable liners.
B. Edge Treatment: Aluminum “L” shaped, non-fastened edging with perforations for drainage. Or
PVC “L” shaped edging with drainage slots. Size to conform to height of soil. Edging must have
and maintain the strength and rigidity to restrain the green roof modules and keep them in place
as well as restraining the media and plants above the module if deeper trays with biodegradable
liners are used.
SPECIFIER NOTE: Delete paragraph if drain covers not required. .
C. Drain Covers: Stainless steel drain enclosure and cover to enclose roof drains. Provide standard
24 inch by 24 inch or custom sizes as necessary to fit roof drains and fit within modular green roof
system. Height of drain enclosure to match top elevation of surrounding modular green roof
system and accommodate roof drain. Drain covers shall have ‘L’ shaped tabs at bottom edges
that fit beneath surrounding modules.
SPECIFIER NOTE: Delete paragraph if irrigation system not required.
D. Irrigation System: Consult a qualified irrigation specialist to determine appropriate design
configuration of irrigation, including controllers, valves, pipe diameter, layout, pressure, flow rate
and maintenance requirements.
PART 3: EXECUTION
3.1 PRE-INSTALLATION MEETING
A. Convene at least one week before starting work of this section.
3.2 INSTALLATION SEASON
A. Unless otherwise permitted, modules shall be installed when temperatures are above freezing
and conditions are appropriate for the local climate and plant selection.
3.3 PROJECT CONDITIONS
A. Safety: The installing contractors are solely responsible to comply with all applicable safety and
fall protection codes, laws and regulations as required by local, state and federal regulatory
bodies such as OSHA.
B. Install slip sheet/protection layer and the roof membrane waterproofing system in accordance
with manufacturer’s instructions.
C. Perform module installation only after appropriate roofing/membrane system has been installed,
tested for leaks, and certified to be ready for installation of green roof modules by roofing
manufacturer as specified in section 1.5D of this document such that the roofing assembly is
watertight and free draining.
D. Perform module installation only after work on adjacent work surfaces that could be injurious to
plant material, such as painting and washing, have been completed.
E. All surfaces to be smooth, free of debris, soil, and grit prior to placing modules.
F. All surfaces to be maintained clean and free of debris, soil, and grit during installation process.
Never walk upon such materials as they may damage membranes.
G. Erect signs and barriers as required to restrict traffic from work areas until modules are installed.
H. If irrigation system is not required, provide hoses, etc. for temporary irrigation as needed for plant
maintenance.
I. Protect roof surfaces during module installation. Any damage to roof membrane will be repaired
to the satisfaction of the provider of the roof warranty at the installer’s expense, with no additional
cost to the project.
3.4 INSTALLING PLANTER MODULES
A. All roof surfaces shall be smooth, free of debris, planting media, and grit before installing slip
sheet. Clean surface of slip sheet immediately before installing planter modules.
B. Place modules atop slip sheet or other protective material as recommended or specified by the
green roof module manufacturer or roofing membrane manufacturer.
C. Install green roof modules in strict conformance with manufacturer’s instructions. Place in straight
rows with edges tight against adjacent trays.
D. After installation, all modules shall be immediately watered so as to thoroughly moisten growing
media throughout. Water shall be free of substances harmful to plant growth. Installer shall
furnish his own hoses or other means of watering installed planting.
E. Do not install modules directly in low sections of roof where water ponds or where modules will
block flow of drainage. Do not install on saturated roof surface or under freezing weather
conditions.
F. Cut green roof modules as necessary to fit around roof equipment, at roof edges or walls, or to
infill areas as necessary. Install cut modules with the cut edge facing and abutting the adjacent
Eco-Roofs, LLC module, never facing away.
3.5 CLEAN UP AND PROTECTION
A. Excess waste material shall be removed daily. Keep roof clean and work area in an orderly
condition.
B. When installation of green roof modules in an area has been completed, the area shall be cleared
of all debris, soil piles, containers, etc. and all areas swept clean.
C. Any damage to existing roofing or building components as a result of work related to this contract
shall be repaired by the responsible Contractor to its original condition.
D. Protect landscape materials and work from damage due to construction operations by other
contractors and trades on site. Maintain protection during installation and maintenance periods.
E. Insurance on stored or installed materials is the responsibility of the Contractor. Such insurance
shall cover fire, theft, vandalism, and any other damage that may occur to the materials. Should
the Contractor elect not to provide such insurance, the Contractor will in no way hold the Owner
responsible for any losses incurred during the project. The Contractor is responsible for all costs
incurred in replacing materials prior to date of substantial completion.
3.6 MAINTENANCE
A. The Contractor shall be responsible for maintenance until warranty period is complete.
B. Maintain modules, including watering, spot weeding, application of herbicides, fungicides,
insecticides, fertilizers, and replanting until a full, uniform stand of plants free of weeds,
undesirable species, disease, and insects is achieved and accepted by the Architect.
1. Water modules/plants as required.
2. Repair, rework, and replant all areas that have not become established.
3. Apply fungicides and insecticides as required to control diseases and insects. Comply
with all applicable local, State and Federal regulations and label instructions when
applying these materials.
4. Utilize supplier recommended maintenance procedures.
5. Document all maintenance activities. A copy of maintenance records shall be sent to
Eco-Roofs, LLC on a quarterly basis.
3.7 ACCEPTANCE
A. Inspection to determine acceptance of modules will be made by the Architect upon Contractor's
notification, which is to be provided to the architect at least 14 working days before requested
inspection date.
1. Modules will be acceptable provided all requirements including maintenance period have
been complied with and healthy, even colored, viable plants are established.
B. Owner will assume maintenance and care of vegetated roof system following acceptance, except
as modified by a maintenance service agreement between Owner and manufacturer.
