The college was founded on Christian principles and was intended to provide women a proper Christian education along with practical skills. The college began in a single log cabin home which housed twenty girls along with the Sibley’s. Since then, the college has expanded adding a number of dorms and classroom buildings. The college has also expanded from having around a 20 students in the 1800’s to now over 12,000 students attending, male and female. This file follows the college through these changes and has a number of important documents in the college’s history. After beginning in 1827, the college was officially approved by the state of Missouri in 1853, which is included in the file. The first building, Sibley was built in 1860. The building has had a number of additions made to it, including the South wing in 1881 and North wing in 1886. The next building was added was Jubilee Hall in 1908, which was renamed Ayers Hall. Shortly following, Butler Hall was added in 1915. The campus now has seven female halls and six male halls. Included in the Lindenwood file are dedication programs and photographs of several of these buildings. In documents file are the school’s monthly bulletins from 1910 through 1979. These bulletins tell of important news that month at the college, upcoming events, and articles written by the students. Also included are a few copies of the Griffin, a literary magazine and a few copies of the Kappa PI Sketchbook. Other publications of interest in the file are various copies of the Lindenbark newspaper from 1927-1951 and several newspaper articles and brochures. In addition to these publications, there are commencement programs dating from 1860 into the 1980’s. The file also contains an extensive file of documents and publications from the 1927 Centennial. As a part of a well rounded education, Lindenwood also offers a number of activities for students to be a part of. The file contains programs from several musical and theatrical performances in the school’s history, as well as information on sororities and sports programs. Also included are several articles concerning a peace talk given by Jane Addams and other lectures who have spoken at Lindenwood. A number of teachers and other faculty members have files with newspaper articles and other documents. This file provides both general and specific information on various people and events which have shaped Lindenwood’s history.
