Freshwater Pollution Photos Photo 1 Caption: Chemical fertilizers and pesticides run off of agricultural fields into nearby lakes and rivers, damaging sensitive ecosystems. Pollution that flows across the land or into groundwater like this is more difficult to intercept than chemicals released from a pipe. Photo 2 Caption: Scientists have recently been able to detect new types of chemicals in waterways, including pharmaceuticals given to livestock and humans. We are only beginning to understand the impacts of this cocktail of chemicals on nature and humans. Research has shown that the amounts of synthetic estrogen found in streams can cause sex changes in frogs. This and other synthetic chemicals may contribute to deformities increasing found in frogs in streams and ponds.
