A gentle adventure on the Soonwaldsteig Trail
Explore the wilderness - Enjoy the tranquillity - Experience nature
This is precisely what it takes to awaken your thirst for adventure: narrow pathways
leading you into almost impenetrable forests and to hidden natural treasures. Sweatinducing ascents are rewarded with unique views, while quirky rock formations are
just begging to be climbed.
The Soonwaldsteig Trail provides a perfect mix of hiking in harmony with nature, and
also in harmony with oneself. The Soonwaldsteig Trail always keeps its promise:
beautifully austere high plateaux with deep chiselled valleys. Expansive deciduous
forests ensure that the air is fresh and rich in oxygen, giving a truly healthy climate.
You will also find great diversity in terms of flora and fauna, living witnesses to the
exciting geology of the region. There are plenty of ancient walls tucked away in
forests, and castles and palaces on mountain peaks all have tales to tell of the Celts,
Romans and the Middle Ages.
The hiking route runs from the romantic Rhine Valley at Bingen via the densely
forested quartzite ridges of the Soonwald Forest in the Hunsrück through to the idyllic
Hahnenbach Valley at Kirn. Along this route, hikers experience a primeval
wilderness, the like of which can rarely be found today. The dramatic landscape of
the Soonwald-Nahe Nature Park with its oases of tranquillity is a real source of
reinvigoration for stressed human beings. In secluded forests, where the only noises
are provided by Mother Nature herself, we can find our true selves and replenish our
energy reserves to fortify ourselves for coping with everyday life. An oasis of
tranquillity in a meadow right in the heart of the road-free Hahnenbach Valley is the
perfect spot for some relaxation and gaining a sense of wellbeing. Taking a route that
is more than forty kilometres in length through the woodland areas of Lützelsoon and
Großer Soon, the trail is well away from any settlements and crosses just a few rarely
used country roads.

Press release note
2015
Formerly the hunting ground of statesmen, the area is now home to rare species of
flora and fauna. In autumn, the rutting call of the deer can be heard emanating from
the secluded forests. Resplendent orchids grow under magnificent beech trees, and if
you are quiet enough you might even have the chance to see a timid feral cat.
Langenstein, a sharp rocky spire in the Simmerbach Valley, is a breeding ground for
peregrine falcons and black storks.
Quartzite and slate form the bedrock of the Soonwald Forest. The trail mainly follows
a route along the very pinnacle of the quartzite ridge. Rocky scree, ancient boundary
stones and sharp ridges come together to create impressive climbing rocks, and
really make you feel like you are on a proper trek. From the viewing towers and rocky
viewpoints en route, vistas sweep far out into the Nahe Valley, over the Hunsrück
Plateau and into the Rhine Valley.
Plenty of emphasis has been placed on route quality when establishing the 83
kilometre Soonwaldsteig Trail. With an action-packed route taking hikers right
through the heart of nature, scenic and cultural highlights, and exemplary signage, it
is equipped in keeping with the quality criteria laid out by the German Hiking Institute.
The Institute certified the route as a premium hiking trail with 50 adventure points.
