Press release note 2014 Hiking in the impressive natural scenery of the Hunsrück The Hunsrück low mountain region offers outdoor activities at their very best. Hiking is equally popular among holidaymakers and day trippers alike, be it for distance hiking or circular routes, with or without luggage, through dynamic scenic areas, or passing cultural sites. The following stretches provide an interesting cross-section of the range of attractive hiking routes in the Hunsrück: The Saar-Hunsrück Climb, which is certified with the highest number of adventure points (64) for a long-distance hiking route, and is therefore considered the best premium long-distance hiking trail in Germany. The trail takes hikers through two states from Perl into the glittering gemstone metropolis of Idar-Oberstein or into the Roman city of Trier. The scenic diversity of the route is mightily impressive: the river landscapes of the Saar, Moselle and Nahe compete against the densely forested ranges and ridges of the Hunsrück low mountain region. Trekking passages made up of narrow pathways provide an unadulterated experience of the natural scenery far from civilisation. Flat hiking stretches on soft forest floors, through beautiful meadow landscapes and along idyllic brook and river courses are the ideal remedy for the feet and souls of hikers. Those with a keen sense of adventure can expect to encounter steep descents, primeval moorlands, dramatic rocky passages and impressive narrow valleys. A dense network of fantastic circular hiking routes known as the “Traumschleifen Saar-Hunsrück” (Saar-Hunsrück Dream Loops) really does take hikers into dream territory. These premium short routes between 8 and 15 kilometres in length are mostly along narrow, natural pathways. Babbling brooks and towering cliffs quickly alternate with breathtaking viewpoints and impressive natural and cultural memorials. Hikes on the Dream Loops provide a relaxing natural experience and allow hikers to make a wide range of discoveries in the region. Travelling along these and many of the other SaarHunsrück Dream Loops, hikers will find pretty spots to take a break and enjoy some down time, as well as plenty of taverns serving a bite to eat. The 83 km graded Soonwaldsteig Trail hiking route from Kirn to Bingen through the Soonwald Nahe Nature Park promises a perfect mix of hiking in harmony with nature, and also in harmony with oneself. Expansive deciduous forests ensure that the air is fresh and rich in oxygen, giving a truly healthy climate. You will also find great diversity in terms of flora and fauna, living witnesses to the exciting geological past of the region. Ancient walls hidden away in forests, and castles and palaces on mountain peaks all have tales to tell of the Celts, Romans and the Middle Ages. The historically fascinating Ausoniusweg hiking route is of special interest to fans of pilgrimage routes. This road, which existed way back in Roman times, was the route along which Ausonius, a scholar and educator of Emperor Constantine's son, travelled as early as 368 AD. The route combines a variety of historical elements with untouched natural scenery. Enjoy a hike in the footsteps of Ausonius and allow yourself to forget your everyday cares - this is a tempting treat for more than just city dwellers. The route, which is approximately 120 km in length, still runs partially along the ancient Roman road, through the lush green meadows and shady forests of the Hunsrück. Climbing up from the Rhine, and passing through Roman towns such as Kirchberg, hikers roam through the scenic beauty of the Hunsrück high plateau on foot. There are plenty of attractions to enjoy en route including Roman games at the Ausoniushütte lodge, a reconstructed watchtower at Dill, and the Celtic-Roman Belginum Archaeological Park with interactive museum at Morbach-Wederath. And awaiting walkers at the end of the hike is Trier, the oldest city in Germany with countless Roman monumental buildings.
