Peer Mediation: SAFE Team: Peer Mediation is a program that allows students the opportunity to resolve their conflicts in a positive way, and in a safe environment with the help of other students. Peer Mediators are specially chosen and trained by appropriate staff members. The mediators help by using problem-solving procedures to clarify the nature of the dispute and to reach a solution satisfactory to all involved. The SAFE Team is comprised of PVI teachers, administrators, and PV Security to provide a safe environment for all PVI staff and students. Anyone can make a referral to Peer Mediation: students, parents, teachers, administrators, and/or counselors. Once a referral is made, the faculty advisor reviews the referral and decides if it is an appropriate referral. If so, a Peer Mediation session is scheduled. If not, the issue may be referred to a counselor or an administrator. All Peer Mediation sessions are kept confidential by all involved. If you have any questions about our Peer Mediation Program, please contact: Julie Romanisko, Gena Orlowski, or Jen Bowman. In order to provide and maintain the safest possible environment for students, staff, and community members, metal/weapon detection equipment may be utilized for comprehensive and/or random searches in school, at school programs, and/or school activities on or off school premises. In the event an individual refuses to cooperate with scanning procedures, appropriate disciplinary action will be taken. Referrals can be made by parents, teachers, students, administrators, and/or counselors. Referral forms are located in the main office and library. All information is kept confidential including the name of the person making the referral. Some problems that students may experience which can be helped through the S.H.A.Re process include: eating disorders, depression, substance abuse, truancy, physical and sexual abuse, school phobia, peer acceptance, poor social skill, and academic difficulties. The Pleasant Valley School District has collaborated with ReDCo Group Behavioral Health to provide school-based counseling and parent support services. The services are being funded through a grant obtained by Pleasant Valley. Services will be available from January 2007 through May 2007. Referrals for this service at Pleasant Valley Intermediate School are made through the S.H.A.Re Team. IST is a positive, success-oriented program which uses specific assessment and intervention techniques to help remove educational, behavioral, or affective stumbling blocks for all students in the regular classroom. The IST process involves three steps: 1) identifying a student’s needs for academic or behavioral support; 2) determining the strategies needed to assist the student; and 3) implementing intervention strategies through a continuum of services. The IS Core Team consists of building administrators, support teacher, referring teacher(s), parent(s), guidance counselor, and any other individual who may be of assistance. For more information on IST please contact Gail Schuler. Bullying Team: Bullying occurs with alarming frequency in all schools. Studies have shown our children are bullied on a daily basis. Bullying has long term negative effects not only for victims, but bullies as well. Bullying has two main criteria; intentional “harm doing” and acts that are carried out repeatedly over a period of time. Bullying can be physical, mental, or emotional in nature often times making it more difficult to identify. Our goal at PVI is to recognize these types of situations, identify those involved, and intervene before the problem escalates. The process begins by submitting a confidential SAFE Team referral form (located in the cafeteria, library, and office.) Referrals can be made by teachers, students, counselors, and other school staff. The Bullying Committee then interviews victims/targets first to gain an understanding of the situation. The committee then meets with the bully/bullies involved to discuss their actions. It is made clear at this time that bullying is not tolerated at PVI and their actions must change. If the behavior continues, disciplinary actions will result. Teachers are made aware of students in their classrooms that have been labeled as a bully. These students are monitored by various staff throughout the course of the year. Follow up sessions with victims are conducted on a regular basis to see if the situation has improved. We believe that this program and process contributes to healthy school environment. 2007 Bullying Team Members Include: Gena Orlowski Mel Ludwig Jen Bowman Diane Rostock James Igoe
