OCCUPATIONAL GROUP CHARACTERISTICS
Legal Support
This Occupational Group is in the Job Family "Legal."
Description: This occupational group is made up of paralegals, legal secretaries, legal
clerks, court reporters and other workers who provide support to lawyers and judges.
Paralegals analyze legal material for internal use, maintain reference files, conduct
research for attorneys, and collect and analyze evidence for agency hearings. They
may then prepare informative or explanatory material on laws, agency regulations, and
agency policy for general use by the agency and the public. Legal secretaries prepare
correspondence and legal papers such as summonses, complaints, motions,
responses, and subpoenas under the supervision of an attorney or paralegal. They also
may review legal journals and assist in other ways with legal research, such as verifying
quotes and citations in legal briefs. Court reporters usually prepare written transcripts,
make copies, and provide transcript information to courts, counsel, parties, and
members of the public upon request. They also develop procedures for easy storage
and retrieval of all stenographic notes and files in paper or digital format. Legal clerks
assist lawyers, judges and commissioners in conducting legal research, helping to
prepare legal briefs for attorneys and handling clerical and administrative duties.

Occupational Group may have up to three different performance levels. When
determining the level of a position within the Legal Support Occupational Group, the
following performance factors should be considered:

Performance levels typically associated with each Level:
Level 1: This is entry-level work performing and/or supervising moderately
routine tasks. The job requires organizational skills and skill in composing documents.
A general legal knowledge and a basic understanding of the judicial process and
administrative procedures are required for this job. Errors may cause inaccuracies in
reports, records or findings.
Level 2: This is work performing as a court or hearings reporter. The job
requires skill in transcribing and composing documents, maintaining filing systems and

developing records storage procedures. A general knowledge of legal vocabulary and a
basic understanding of the judicial process and administrative procedures are required
for this job. Errors may cause inaccuracies in reports, records or findings.
Level 3: This is work performing as the court or hearings clerk. The job requires
skill in conducting research and preparing legal documents. A general knowledge of
legal vocabulary and a thorough understanding of the judicial process and
administrative procedures are required for this job. Errors may have significant impact
on operational effectiveness.
