Job Family: 23-0000 Legal OCCUPATIONAL GROUP CHARACTERISTICS Legal Support This Occupational Group is in the Job Family "Legal." Description: This occupational group is made up of paralegals, legal secretaries, legal clerks, court reporters and other workers who provide support to lawyers and judges. Paralegals analyze legal material for internal use, maintain reference files, conduct research for attorneys, and collect and analyze evidence for agency hearings. They may then prepare informative or explanatory material on laws, agency regulations, and agency policy for general use by the agency and the public. Legal secretaries prepare correspondence and legal papers such as summonses, complaints, motions, responses, and subpoenas under the supervision of an attorney or paralegal. They also may review legal journals and assist in other ways with legal research, such as verifying quotes and citations in legal briefs. Court reporters usually prepare written transcripts, make copies, and provide transcript information to courts, counsel, parties, and members of the public upon request. They also develop procedures for easy storage and retrieval of all stenographic notes and files in paper or digital format. Legal clerks assist lawyers, judges and commissioners in conducting legal research, helping to prepare legal briefs for attorneys and handling clerical and administrative duties.
