Grading Procedure Grades will be determined by seven general areas. These areas include laboratories, in-class assignments, homework assignments, tests/quizzes, notebook checks, projects, and class participation. Here is a typical example of how I would determine a student’s average. Student scores are the following: classification rotation lab, 35/35, homework 10/15, chapter 10 test 20/30, and notebook check 42/50. Overall points earned 107/130 = 82%. This year you will also take semester exams which will count 20% of your semester grade. Each nine weeks grade will count 40% of your semester grade. Paint Valley’s Grading Scale A B C D F = 90 – 100 = 89 – 80 = 79 – 70 = 69 – 60 = ≤ 59 Cheating Cheating on any level will not be tolerated. If I find a person is cheating or allowing someone else to cheat off their paper, he or she will receive a zero for the assignment and a referral will be written. This includes plagiarism. Homework Reading assignments and certain homework assignments will be required for completion outside of class. Late Work Late work will not be accepted unless the student has a documented, excused absence. Make Up Work A student who has an excused absence is allowed to make up the work missed provided that the student makes arrangements with the teacher immediately upon their return to school. It is the student’s responsibility to get the work that is missed from the teacher. All make up work must be submitted within the deadline set by the teacher. You can find the weekly agenda and important announcements in the high school tab of the school’s webpage at http://paintvalleylocalschools.org . Look for the physical science tab under Mrs. Mohan’s webpage. I will include Word documents, web links, PowerPoint presentations, and other important information on my webpage. Materials Needed for the Course You will need a three-ring binder (1” thickness), a one-subject spiral notebook or composition book, No. 2 pencils, 12 pack of colored pencils, notebook paper, a book cover, and an external storage device (jump drive), a box of tissues, and a roll of paper towels. You will also need to bring your textbook along with your notebook, paper, science journal, and pencils with you to class on a daily basis. Textbook Textbooks will be issued during the first week of school. Your textbook is Glencoe Physical Science with Earth Science. The replacement cost of the textbook is $81.42 so you must keep it from damage and loss. I would like for each student to cover his/her book with an inexpensive book cover. Notebooks You will be required to keep your assignments in a notebook for this course. If you lose your notebook, you must tell me immediately, and I will instruct you on how to make up this large assignment. How to Contact the Teacher Mrs. Mohan is available during her planning period (7th period) and after school by appointment. Please call 634-3582 during this time to speak directly to Mrs. Mohan or leave a message on her voice mail. Parents may also contact Mrs. Mohan by emailing her at kerry.mohan@paintvalleylocalschools.org . 1. Be on time. If you are not in your seat with the necessary materials (book, notebook, pencil, etc.), you will be marked as tardy. 2. Be prepared for class. Bring your book, paper, notebook, science journal, pencils, and a positive attitude with you everyday. 3. Listen to and follow directions. Students are to pay attention when Mrs. Mohan is speaking so that time is not wasted repeating directions. 4. Raise your hand if you need help or to ask and answer questions. This will eliminate excessive talking and keep the lines of communication open. 5. Respect others. This includes all students, the teacher, and other’s property. The other students have the right to learn without interruptions and disturbances in class. Breaking the rules will result in the following disciplinary actions: Step 1 = a warning (verbal or nonverbal). Step 2 = an after-school or lunch detention and/or a parent phone call. Step 3 = an office referral. *See the Student Handbook for Paint Valley High School’s discipline policy. **If the offense against the rule is severe enough, the disciplinary action may start on any step.
