Mrs. (Woods) Brubaker Humanities Class Guidelines About the teacher I received a Bachelor’s Degree in Journalism and a minor in English from the University of Houston – Main Campus. I am currently certified in 4-8 Generalist Education, 8-12 English and K-12 Special Education. I have been teaching for six years, all of which have been in Alvin ISD. This is my third year at Nolan Ryan Junior High and I absolutely love my Longhorn family! Supplies Beyond pencil/pen and interactive notebook (composition book), you are required to have one very important thing for my class everyday: a book to read - whether it is brought from home, checked out from the library, or borrowed from my classroom. Suggested supplies that I would love to have donated to my classroom are: Tissues (Kleenex) Post-it notes (any color) Construction paper (any color) Pencils Hand sanitizer Glue sticks Colored pencils (map pencils) Other suggested supplies are on the main class section page. BYOD – Bring your own device You are welcome to bring your own internet device to use for class use. Please make sure your family’s data plan is communicated. Students might be asked to text answers, use a QR reader, use a timer, or search the internet. Laptops will be available for student use as well. I follow the “productive use” rule in my room. If I have not asked for devices to be out, I shouldn’t see them. I will take your device. If students are texting, listening to music (etc.) without permission after the bell has rang; I can take the device and turn it in to the office. The parent would then have to come and pay the fine to retrieve the device. Students without devices should have a small flash drive to use. Students are allowed and encouraged to bring reading tablets (Kindle, Nook) to use in class if their parent agrees; however, it is not a class requirement. Textbooks Texas History and Literature books will be kept in the classroom. If you would like to check out a copy of each book for home use, please contact the front office. I will post the link to both online copies ASAP. Notebook An interactive reading notebook (composition book) will be required in this class. This notebook will help you to organize your thoughts, reflect on your improvement, and give you an opportunity to respond to your reading. Because one notebook will cover both social studies and reading/writing, expect that you will need to purchase another one at some point throughout the year. Homework You will follow the Pre-AP guidelines in regards to homework. Guidelines for Make-Up Work You are responsible for getting missed work from absences. Guidelines for behavior: 1. 2. 3. 4. Be prepared. Be respectful. Be responsible. Be the best you can be. Please remember that my books, supplies and classroom hold the key to help you be successful. With these tools, I will do my very best in guiding you to love reading/social studies just as I do. I can’t wait to share my passion with you. To better meet the needs of all students, this course outline can be modified at the teachers’ discretion.
