Applications are open to: All Candidates Functional Area: Research Scientist/Engineer % Client Focus - Internal: 50% % Client Focus - External: 50% Reports to the: Team Leader, Energy Economics and Analysis Number of Direct Reports: 0 Role Overview: We seek a researcher who will utilise their knowledge of the social and physical sciences, quantitative modelling and energy system to develop techno-economic models of Australia’s energy sector with a view to assessing existing and emerging energy technologies, sector trends and policy directions. Duties and Key Result Areas: Under the direction of senior research scientists, carry out innovative, impactful research of strategic importance to CSIRO that will lead to important research outcomes. Develop, apply and interpret techno-economic models of the energy system, particularly the Australian electricity and transport sectors. Identify and integrate key energy sector datasets from across Australia and internationally. Produce professional reports for key industry and government clients from across the energy sector and contribute to quality science publications. Contribute to the development of innovative concepts and ideas for further research. Make a contribution to the effective functioning of the research team and help deliver CSIRO’s organisational objectives and plans. Work collaboratively with colleagues, industry and government on critical projects for external partners. Communicate effectively and respectfully with all staff, clients and suppliers in the interests of good business practice, collaboration and enhancement of CSIRO’s reputation. Adhere to the spirit and practice of CSIRO’s Values, Health, Safety and Environment plans and policies, Diversity initiatives and Zero Harm goals. Selection Criteria: Under CSIRO policy only those who meet all essential criteria can be appointed Pre-Requisites: 1. Education/Qualifications: A PhD in a relevant field of economic study and/or at least three years of relevant professional industry experience working in the Australian energy sector. 2. Communication: High level written and oral communication skills with the ability to represent the research team effectively internally and externally, including at national and international conferences. 3. Publications: A record of contributing to key reports, either for industry stakeholders or academic audiences. 4. Behaviours: A history of professional and respectful behaviours and attitudes in a collaborative environment. Essential Criteria: 1. PhD in a relevant field of economic study and/or at least three years of relevant professional industry experience working in the Australian energy sector. 2. Proficiency in the General Algebraic Modelling System (GAMS), MATLAB or Python programming languages. 3. Experience in working with large data sets, including identification and integration of data relevant to the Australian energy sector and the use of contemporary database management systems (such as PostgreSQL and MySQL). 4. The ability to work effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary, regionally dispersed research team, plus the motivation and discipline to carry out autonomous research. 5. A record of research innovation and creativity, plus the ability & willingness to incorporate novel ideas and approaches into scientific investigations. Desirable Criteria: 1. Experience in application of the “TIMES” (The Integrated MARKAL-EFOM System) model generator. 2. Advanced skills in software development, Java and statistical software packages (such as R).
