As you may be aware, the new South Glasgow University Hospital and new Royal Hospital for
Sick Children are due to open on the current Southern site early in 2015.
With this in mind, please note that positions based within the Victoria Infirmary, Mansionhouse
Unit, the Western Infirmary and the current Royal Hospital for Sick Children at Yorkhill will change
location and move to the new hospitals.
Gartnavel General Hospital and Glasgow Royal Infirmary will also have some services affected
by moves to the new Hospitals.
These changes mean your base may change after joining us and you will be informed as soon as
possible prior to any change of base.

BASE: CLYDE SECTOR
This post of Consultant Physician with an interest in Gastroenterology will be based at
the Royal Alexandra Hospital (RAH) Paisley, five miles from the bustling West end of
Glasgow and Inverclyde Royal Hospital, Greenock. The successful candidate will
integrate into a team comprising seven Consultants to develop services within
gastroenterology across Clyde. This will offer a real opportunity for the successful
candidate to be involved in the development of a successful modern consultant led
service for a population of around 400,000. Acute Hospitals within Clyde are part of a
continual review of acute services aimed at maintaining and further developing high
quality clinical care. Candidates are strongly encouraged to contact and visit the teams
within Clyde, as listed below, in order to further explore the excellent opportunities
available in more detail.
Applicants should have full GMC registration, a licence to practise, MRCP or equivalent
and eligibility for inclusion on the Specialist Register. Those trained in the UK should
have evidence of higher specialist training leading to CCT or eligibility for specialist
registration (CESR) or be within 6 months of confirmed entry from date of Interview.
Non-UK applicants must demonstrate equivalent training.

1.
General Information
The Royal Alexandra Hospital (RAH) is situated in Paisley and provides acute
health care services to Renfrew District (pop 205,000). The Hospital is a 968 bed
modern District General Hospital (DGH) which opened in 1986 and is one of the
largest and busiest teaching DGHs in Scotland. In addition the hospital is
currently the base for provision of surgical, orthopaedic, ophthalmology,
paediatric and the majority of maternity services to the population north of the
Clyde served by the Vale of Leven Hospital.
The hospital provides a wide range of District General Hospital specialties with
excellent support facilities. The hospital has a first class modern radiology
department and services. All departments participate in undergraduate teaching
and there is an active postgraduate educational programme. The hospital enjoys
an enviable reputation for undergraduate teaching and is highly popular with
training grades. There is also a good medical library service.
Inverclyde Royal Hospital is a modern district general hospital in Greenock, and
serves the Inverclyde District (Greenock, Gourock, Port Glasgow and
Kilmacolm), parts of North Ayrshire, The Isle of Bute and the Cowal Peninsula, a
total population of approximately 120,000 comprising both urban and rural
populations. The hospital was opened in 1979 and currently has 342 beds.
All major specialties are represented within the hospital, with a 90-bedded
Geriatric Hospital and 8 bed Physically Disabled Rehabilitation Unit. There is a
dedicated hospital wide academic programme supported by a strong departmental
educational commitment. The hospital is well provided with a dedicated education
centre and IT support. The hospital has an excellent reputation in supporting and
nurturing its junior staff and has an excellent reputation for post graduate training.
2.
The Medical Unit
The Medical Unit at the Royal Alexandra Hospital has 209 beds. This includes an
18 bedded Coronary Care / Chest Pain Unit, a 30 bedded medical receiving ward
and Medical Assessment Unit. The medical unit provides an acute service in
general medicine with clinics in general medicine, diabetes and endocrinology,
gastroenterology, cardiology, asthma, respiratory medicine and haematology.
The Medical Unit at Inverclyde Royal consists of an Acute Medical Receiving
Unit and three general medical wards totalling 116 beds and an 11 bedded
Coronary Care Unit. The Medical Unit provides an acute service in general
medicine with clinics in general medicine, diabetes & endocrinology, cardiology,
rheumatology and respiratory medicine in addition to gastroenterology.

Inflammatory Bowel Disease across Clyde.
6.
Gastroenterology Services
1.1. There are thirty nine in-patient beds at Royal Alexandra Hospital provided across
wards 27 and 14 for Gastroenterology and currently 10-15 in-patient beds at
Inverclyde Royal.
1.2. Staffing for Gastroenterology services in Clyde will be seven Consultant
Physicians.
1.3. Nurse specialists in Inflammatory Bowel Disease (3), Hepatitis C (2), Liver Nurse
Specialist (1) and Alcohol Liaison are already in post. An anorectal and
oesophageal manometry service is provided by Surgical Nurse Specialists.
1.4. Day case and outpatient facilities include: Two endoscopy rooms in the Day
Surgery unit at RAH, two rooms available at IRH. ERCP is carried out by two
Physicians and one Surgeon, currently at both RAH an IRH. Outpatient services
are provided on three Hospital sites, although the post holder would not be
expected to work across three sites.
7.
Acute Medical Services
The team of Consultant Physicians at the Royal Alexandra Hospital have
responsibility for acute medical services mainly at the Royal Alexandra Hospital
and also Inverclyde Royal Hospital, there is a managed responsibility for
gastroenterology in-patients at Inverclyde Royal Hospital from the
gastroenterology team.
7.1
Acute Receiving Ward
GP referred medical patients are triaged from the Emergency Department to the
Medical Assessment Unit at Royal Alexandra Hospital Monday to Friday 10am to
10pm. All patients are reviewed by a senior doctor of which just under 50% are
discharged home. Patients requiring admission can be admitted to the relevant
specialty bed direct from MAU.
Acute medical admissions are admitted to the Acute Medical Unit (ward 2) at the
RAH, which is staffed by one of the consultants on a rotating ‘Physician of the
Week’ basis Monday morning to Friday lunchtime and an Acute Care Physician.
Patients are then triaged to the appropriate specialty wards if not for early
discharge. Separate rotas are in place to cover weekend acute and continuing care.
Acute receiving at Inverclyde Royal is based upon a seven day, 24 hour rolling
pattern with consultant presence supported by junior and middle grade staff and
advanced nurse practitioners. The medical receiving unit accepts direct GP and
ED referrals and is supported by junior and middle grade medical staff and more
recently dedicated advanced nurse practitioners.
7.2
Coronary Care Unit
Patients with acute myocardial infarction, acute coronary syndromes, arrhythmias
or congestive cardiac failure at the RAH are admitted to the 18 bedded coronary
care unit, staffed during the day by one of the consultant cardiologists on a
rotational basis, supported by junior medical staff from the cardiology ward. IRH
has an 11 bedded unit staffed during the day by consultant cardiology staff
supported by middle grade trainees.
1.3. Medical High Dependency Unit (HDU)
The RAH has three medical HDU beds at present within the combined 12 bedded
HDU, with scope to increase to four or more medical HDU beds if required. IRH
has a combined HDU of 4 beds.
7.4
Junior Doctors out-of-hours
A Hospital @ Night service started at the RAH and IRH in August 2006. This is
part of ongoing work addressing the impact of modernising Medical Careers and
implementing plans to support the delivery of high quality sustainable services.
8.
Medicine for the Elderly Service
Medicine for the Elderly is part of the Rehabilitation and Assessment Directorate,
but many of its activities and adult medicine are combined. In particular, out-ofhours cover is provided by juniors from Medicine for the Elderly and adult
medicine and both department share educational meetings.
The Medicine for the Elderly Consultants visit the acute receiving ward at the
RAH on a daily basis and arrange transfer to the Medicine for the Elderly Unit of
those appropriate patients. A Stroke Unit (Ward 4) taking all age groups is led by
Dr H Slavin. The consultant staff at IRH are part of the acute receiving rota and
also support the unit daily with the assistance of advanced nurse practitioners.
9.
Management Arrangements
Emergency Care and Medical Services Directorate – Clyde Sector, consists of
Emergency Medicine and General Medicine. The consultant appointed will be
expected to participate fully in the work of the Directorate.
The Clinical Director for Medicine across Clyde is Dr Chris Jones based at
IRH/RAH. There are two Lead Clinicians for Medicine across Clyde: Dr Jane
Gravil at RAH/VOL and Dr Lisa Hutton at Inverclyde Royal Hospital.

The appointee will provide consultant leadership in Gastroenterology.

Inpatient: Gastroenterology beds based at RAH.
Gastroenterology beds based at IRH
Outpatient: Clyde, based at Royal Alexandra Hospital and Inverclyde Royal
Hospital.
Endoscopy: Clyde, based at Royal Alexandra Hospital and Inverclyde Royal
Hospital.
1.3.
Suggested job plan
The job plan will be tailored to the successful candidate’s interests and the
following should only be taken as guidance. A detailed job plan will in due course
be agreed with the Clinical Director or Associate Medical Director/Chief of
Medicine and thereafter this will be subject to periodic review and adjustment if
necessary. The appointee may be required to support clinical activity elsewhere
across Greater Glasgow and Clyde.

10.4
On call duties
The requirement for on-call including general medical commitments will be
agreed amongst the Gastroenterology team.
10.5
Support staff
There is secretarial support for the consultant.
10.6
Specialty Interests
The unit will try and support the candidate in development of any specialty
interest or technique in which they wish to participate.
11.
Postgraduate and Undergraduate Training
Both units have a postgraduate programme which includes a weekly unit meeting,
monthly journal club and SHO tutorial sessions. There are weekly hospital
postgraduate meetings during term time. Mr Andrew Renwick is the postgraduate
tutor at RAH and Dr Manfred Staber at IRH.
The Medical Units teach a number of medical students from Glasgow University.
As part of the new curriculum teaching of years one to five is becoming
established.
