Navigator’s Notes
“The achievements of an organization are the results of the combined efforts of each individual.”
Vince Lombardi
Mr. Lombardi – was, for those too young to know, the legendary coach of the Green Bay Packers.
The trophy for the winner of the Super Bowl is named after him. As I was growing up – I was a diehard fan of the Detroit Lions – perennial leaders of the Central Division. Then, along came Mr.
Lombardi and Bret Favre. I really disliked the ‘Pack’. They dominated the Central Division of the NFL
for many years.
We have 176 Sir Knights (SK’s) in our Assembly – 1084. With so many ‘individuals’ we could move
mountains if we collectively decided to do so. So, how do we begin? If you watch even a smattering
of football, you see several ‘captains’ in the center of the field for the coin toss - they are the captains
of the offensive team, the defensive team, the kick-off team, the receiving team and any other
captains the coaching staff feels are necessary.
Using the football ‘captains’ idea, I would like to have a few ‘captains’ on our team as we embark on
the 2015-16 ‘season’ – I would call them ‘Coaches’ at the Assembly level. They would build teams in
the following areas; Church Activities, Senior Activities, Social Activities, Patriotic Activities and
Community Activities – much like the coaches in my football analogy. I would like to see a local
captain in each category at the Council level, so each ‘coach’ would have captains in each Council
that is represented in our Assembly.
So far, the following Sir Knights have agreed to take on the Director/Coach assignments:
Church
- SK Wes Bell
Senior
- SK Bill Deml
Social
- SK Stephen DeRight
Patriotic
- Open
Community - Open
Anyone willing to learn more about these roles, or if you’d just like to help move a boulder, please
contact me. Marv Gabalski (423) 949-4927 (H); (423) 580-1676 (C)

Scribacious Mike’s Musings
Pope Francis is bringing a smiling personable pastoral touch to the Vatican. This Pope shuns the trappings of
power, preferring to mix with the poor, outcast, and disabled. He has reformed the Institution for the Works of
Religion (the Vatican Bank) and instituted a Pontifical Commission for the Protection of Minors to deal with the
scandal of pedophile priests. As Pope Francis said in his homily at the beatification of Pope Paul VI , Oct. 19,
2014 “God is not afraid of new things! That is why he is continually surprising us, opening our hearts, and
guiding us in unexpected ways.” We may expect new things from this pope, some surprising, we need to open
our hearts to God’s Love.
