GAMING STANDARDS ASSOCIATION TO PROVIDE A GRANT TO THE UNLV FOUNDATION
TO ESTABLISH TWO GSA PROFESSOR IN RESIDENCE POSITIONS
Course in Gaming Technology Will Offer Certification in GSA Standards
LAS VEGAS (August 11, 2006) – With its standards, the GSA is preparing the world for the future of
gaming technology, and now the organization will prepare the technology workers of tomorrow for a world
with GSA standards. Over the next 3 years, the GSA board of directors has agreed to provide a $900,000
grant to the University of Nevada, Las Vegas Foundation (UNLV Foundation) in order to create two
Professor in Residence positions for the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, School of Informatics and the
William F. Harrah College of Hotel Administration.
The professors will instruct a course in gaming technology wherein students may become certified in GSA
Standards.
GSA President Peter DeRaedt said, “This is a very serious commitment for GSA. The UNLV’s College of
Hotel Administration is well regarded around the world and now its School of Informatics will be able to
offer a course in what we truly believe is the future of gaming technology. Together we will develop the
GSA certified program to support the transfer of knowledge embedded in our standards. The gaming
industry as a whole will benefit from having access to current and highly-trained students. Graduates will
have both the academic and gaming experience requirements to support Nevada’s largest industry.”
The two positions will be filled by a search committee that will include a member of GSA’s executive
board. GSA and the UNLV Foundation hope to have the position filled and the course active by no later
than spring 2007.
Hal Berghel, an Associated Dean in the Howard R. Hughes College of Engineering and Director of the
new UNLV School of Informatics said: “The School of Informatics is excited to be involved in this project.
The global economy ensures that the “global standards” arena will be important for years to come. What
is more, this partnership will enable us to develop expertise that will serve our stakeholders in the gaming
community well in the years to come.”
GSA members will receive a discount for non-matriculation certification programs and seminars provided
by the GSA professors.
