SECONDARY EDUCATION (7-12 CERTIFICATE)
If you are interested in teaching students in grades 7-12, you'll complete our professional
educational sequence while majoring in one of the following: Biology, Chemistry,
Computer Studies, English, English as a Second Language, History, Mathematics,
Modern Language (Spanish or German), Psychology, Speech & Theatre, or Technology.
The coursework associated with the English as a Second Language and the Special
Education endorsement at the 7-12 level is completed in conjunction with the
requirements for the professional educational sequence and the department major.
Teaching in an Additional Field
You may select a major and then, with careful schedule planning, complete enough
courses to receive a teaching endorsement in a second field and be certified to teach more
than one subject. Many combinations are possible; some of the more common examples
of majors combined with second-field endorsements are Mathematics/Computer Science,
Chemistry/Biology or English/Speech & Theatre. A second-field endorsement will give
you an advantage in your job search, so we encourage students to obtain one, although
you should be aware that you may need to spend an extra semester beyond your four
years to complete it.
