Taught by the Transition Coalition, University of Kansas,
www.transitioncoalition.org
Sponsored by the Vermont Department of Education,
Special Education
The Transition Coalition will offer 5 online transition seminars (short courses) designed to provide
novice and veteran education professionals the tools and collaboration necessary to improve transition
planning and services for students with disabilities. Each seminar includes four week-long sessions
with research-based articles, websites, videos, and discussions.
Introduction to Transition Education and Services, October 26 – November 20, 2009
Transition Assessment, January 11 – February 5, 2010
Family Involvement and Student Involvement in Transition, March 1 – 19, 2010
Preparing Students for Employment/Postsecondary Education, March 22 – April 16, 2010
Interagency Collaboration during Transition Planning, May 10 – June 4, 2010
Eligible Participants
The seminar series is open to secondary-level special education teachers, transition coordinators,
directors of special education, adult service providers, parents and other professionals in Vermont who
have direct involvement with high school students with disabilities.
Credit
Each seminar awards 15 hours of Continuing Education Credits (CEUs) from the University of
Kansas. Eligible participants may also enroll in 1 hour of graduate credit. Contact Dr. Amy Gaumer
Erickson, aerickson@ku.edu, for information on graduate credit options and fees.
Scholarships
Applicants who are secondary special educators or VR counselors working in public high school with
transition-aged youth (ages 16-21) are eligible for a scholarship from the Vermont Department of
Education to cover the cost of CEUs for all five seminars if they satisfactorily complete the previous
seminar. Other eligible participants may enroll for $300 per seminar, paid directly to the University of
Kansas.
Time Commitment
The seminars are taught to a cohort of professionals in Vermont who agree to complete all five
seminars over eight months. While the seminars are offered online and asynchronous, participants will
be expected to post comments on biweekly discussion boards and complete assignments by
predetermined dates. Most participants spend 10 hours per week completing seminar requirements.
