GENERAL AND HIGHER PROFESSIONAL TRAINING
After completing pre-registration house jobs in Newcastle and Ashington, I joined the Royal Army
Medical Corps. I attended the Postgraduate Medical Officers Course between August 1982 and
December 1982, following which I gained primary care experience in a military general practice in
West Germany. In 1985 I embarked upon specialist psychiatric training, with posts at the Queen
Elizabeth Military Hospital, Woolwich; Guy’s Hospital; Greenwich District Hospital; New Cross
Hospital, South London; Catterick Military Hospital; British Military Hospital, Hanover. I passed
the membership examination of the Royal College of Psychiatrists in 1987 and obtained my first
consultant post at the Friarage Hospital in Northallerton in August 1990.
CURRENT POST
Since the beginning of August 2000, I have been working in full-time independent private
psychiatric practice with consulting faculties in Leeds, Cleckheaton, Middlesbrough & Newcastle.
I have a broad based practice in adult and old age psychiatry. In the past 12 months I have dealt
with 175 new referrals (excluding medico-legal practice).
My main clinical activities include:
General Psychiatric Practice

Assessment, diagnosis and management of patients referred by their general practitioner.

Occupational psychiatric assessments for various agencies within the public and private
sector.

Founder member of GP Health, an occupational health services for general practitioners,
dentists and senior practice staff in the Cleveland area.
ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Section 12 approved doctor for North Yorkshire, providing emergency psychiatric assessment
under the Mental Health Act.
2. Deprivation of Liberty assessor under the Mental Capacity Act
3. I regularly provide occupational health assessments and reports for employers and
occupational health services, including local authorities, the Police & Fire Services, the NHS
and industry.
4. Visiting consultant psychiatrist, Occupational Health Unit, St James’ University Hospital, Leeds.
5. Visiting consultant psychiatrist, Occupational Health Unit, Bradford Metropolitan District
Council.
6. Over the past few years I have lectured on a wide variety of mental health matters to GPs,
specialists and occupational health doctors.
PREVIOUS NHS EXPERIENCE
1. For 10 years between August 1990 and August 2000, I worked as a full-time NHS consultant in
adult and old age psychiatry, based at the Friarage Hospital in Northallerton. I led the mental
health team in my sector, serving a population of approximately 46,000.
2. Between 1996 and 2000 I was the Clinical Tutor and Director of Postgraduate Medical
Education at the Friarage Hospital in Northallerton.
3. For five years from 1995 to 2000, I was the psychiatric College Tutor and in that capacity I was
the educational supervisor and mentor for psychiatric trainees attached to the Friarage
Hospital.
4. Between 1994 and 2001 I held a weekly clinic at HM Remand Centre in Northallerton,
providing psychiatric support and clinical opinions for the prison medical authorities, and
participating in the local custody diversion scheme. Arising out of this work, I regularly
provided reports for various Courts in the region.
PREVIOUS INDEPENDENT SECTOR EXPERIENCE
Between 2000 and 2009 I worked at the Cygnet Hospital Harrogate where I was the clinical lead
for the eating disorder programme and the alcohol dependence service. I took a lead role in the
2007 Channel 4 documentary “Britain’s Deadliest Addictions”, which was filmed on site. Between
2002 and 2009 I was the Medical Director, with widespread administrative responsibilities,
including clinical audit, clinical governance, CPD, chairing the Medical Advisory Committee and
the development of appraisal.
Between 2005 and 2010, I undertook sessional clinics at the Lincoln base of the independent
occupational health provider, Wellwork Ltd.

MEDICO-LEGAL PRACTICE
I provide approximately 100 reports annually. An increasing proportion of my work has come in
recent years from the Defendant, so that the ratio is now around 65:35 in favour of Claimant work.
Many instructions are now on a single joint expert basis.
My work in this field includes the following:






Psychiatric reports in civil cases for compensation following personal injury, especially post
traumatic stress disorder.
Psychiatric injury at work and assessments in disability discrimination claims.
Testamentary capacity.
Medical negligence.
Advice to independent bodies such as Citizens Advice Bureaux or trade unions on individual
cases.
When required, I attend court to give oral evidence, and have done so on many occasions.
I am a member of the Society of Expert Witnesses and the Expert Witness Institute and I am listed
in the Sweet & Maxwell Directory of Expert Witnesses and the U.K. Register of Expert Witnesses,
and on the Association of Personal Injury Lawyers expert database and the Action Against Medical
Accidents (AVMA) database.
CONTINUING PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
I remain in good standing with the Royal College of Psychiatrists in respect of continuous
professional development.
