Until now
Autumn 2005, Spring and Autumn 2006, the Mundo editorial department produced and
broadcast more than 105 Mundo short documentaries and one special Mundo
programme. YLE’s channels also broadcast a TV-spot for Mundo and Basaari.
Additionally, 4 Basaari documentaries, 2 Etno short documentaries, and 11 Mundo short
documentaries were broadcast during the Week Against Racism. Ten Mundo short
documentaries were chosen as filler programmes for YLE TV1. During the summer, YLE
TV1’s Morning-TV also broadcast a series of Mundo short documentaries.
During 2006 the editorial department of Basaari and Mundo produced 459
transmissions and 114 hours of programmes for YLE TV1, YLE24, FST and TV Finland,
which was a new record for the department. Mundo directors made reports on several
current affairs events eg. the big fire of the Government Railway Storehouse and the
memorial ceremony of Anna Politskovskaja as well as short documentaries about
political issues such as the war in Lebanon and the closing of UPM paper pulp factories
in Voikkaa.
There were six work training periods organised during Autumn 2005, Spring 2006 and
Autumn 2006. Fifteen students were trained in the Mundo editorial department in YLE.
Seven students were trained at Dream Catcher Oy. Additionally, two students completed
the work training period at Dream Catcher Oy during Summer 2006. Six students
completed work training periods in other companies. Every student is planned to
complete two work training periods during the project.
In Autumn 2005 and Spring 2006, the Mundo project arranged meetings with all the
YLE key people in charge of recruitment.
Mundo organised three seminars, participated in the DocPoint festival, the EDUCA
educational fair and many other events, sent Mundo short documentaries to several film
festivals, and organised a photography competition for the Mundo students, the results
of which will be turned into a book and an exhibition during the year 2007.
The Mundo project actively participated in the international cooperation and meetings
of the European Broadcasting Union (EBU). Mundo is also a member of the EBU’s
Intercultural Programme Group, which is developing a Diversity Toolkit for the European
broadcasters.
In May 2006, the CIVIS Media Foundation awarded the jury’s special prize for the
Mundo short documentaries and Mundo project.
During the Spring and Summer 2006, Mundo was represented at the World Village
event in the Helsinki city centre and the annual Media&Message event in Jyväskylä.
In August-September 2006, Mundo’s editorial department celebrated Basaari’s 10th
anniversary. In September, Mundo performed at the Love&Anarchy Festival in Helsinki.
In addition to its own show, Mundo short documentaries were shown as opening films to
the main features and on the outdoor screen. In October the Mundo project participated
in the Helsinki Book Fair, where it arranged two stage performances.
In November, Mundo gathered its transnational partners for a two-day-long meeting in
Helsinki. The Mundo project was also presented as a good example of a well-managed
project at the international Migration and Integration Conference in Essen. Four Mundo
short documentaries were shown as the opening films of the Africa on the Move film
event.
During Autumn 2006, the Mundo students were trained to produce DigiTales short
stories as part of Stadia’s media literacy trainer programme. In December the students’
own stories were presented at Kiasma, the Museum of Contemporary Art. The Mundo
project was also actively participating in the Equal project’s national theme work which
commenced during the autumn. In December, the European Commission compiled a
success story and a description of the achievements of the Mundo project for the use of
the Commission and European citizens.
In January 2007 Mundo took part in the seminar arranged by the national theme and
DocPoint-documentary festival.
