Synopsis on research programme in Nephrology/ Dialysis/ Transplantation

Department of Renal Medicine and Transplantation of the Barts NHS Trust UK have
their fully equipped laboratory based in the William Harvey Research Institute, London,
UK. Professor M Yaqoob is the academic director of this lab with external funding of
over £ 500,000 per year. Over 10 PhD students have successfully completed their
postgraduate training over last 5 years.
All clinically relevant preclinical models are part of project animal licence which include
both nephrotoxic and I/R induced AKI, Models of CKD, Models of Myocardial infarction
with murine echocardiography and Langendorf facilities, Myography, KO and
Transgenic animals, Diabetic kidney disease, Intravital microscopy, genome center, Mass
spectroscopy, HPLC, PCR, Cell culture suites, septic shock models, GN models etc.
Current lines of research.
The research interests of the Lab are:
Mechanisms of ischemia reperfusion injury in heart and kidneys
Uremic cardiovascular disease
Diabetic kidney disease
ESA refractory anaemia of CKD
Progression of CKD (fibrosis and acidosis)
Biomarkers of AKI
Salt induced vascular dysfunction and hypertension
Insulin resistance in CKD (role of liver and clock proteins)
Resolution of acute inflammation
Genetic polymorphisms and outcomes in CKD and renal transplantation
Research/es in which the Fellow will be involved.
Overseas Fellows will access to all of the above and a research project will tailor
made as per their competence and needs.
