Dr Hugh Gallagher is a consultant renal physician based at Epsom and St Helier NHS
Trust and an Honorary Senior Lecturer at St George’s University of London. He has a
longstanding specialist interest in chronic kidney disease (CKD). His main focus is on
improving the treatment of kidney disease in primary care, and he has contributed to the
evidence base for this through his work on the QI-CKD and ENABLE projects. He was
clinical lead for the bid to the Healthcare Quality Improvement Partnership for a National
Clinical Audit of CKD in primary care and sits on the Audit Board. He has worked with
colleagues to make CKD a Clinical Priority for 2013-2016 with Royal College of General
Practitioners, and is now working with the Kidney Care Clinical Champion, Dr Kathryn
Griffith, to help deliver the priority programme. Hugh had recently developed a CKD elearning module for the BMJ with NHS Kidney Care, and sits on the Guideline
Development Group for the 2013 NICE CKD Guideline update. Through his membership
of the BRS CKD Strategy Group he hopes to be able to help translate these guidelines into
practice.
